Moroccans jailed for 'terrorism'

Rabat - Fourteen Moroccans were ordered jailed Saturday for terms ranging from two to 15 years for criminal and terrorist activity, in the latest in a series of trials of suspected Islamists since suicide bomb attacks rocked Casablanca last May, judicial sources said.

Two of the group were given 15-year sentences and two others 10-year terms, while another five got 10 years, and the remainder were ordered to serve out two- to six-year terms.

The Rabat court sent down the accused group, arrested 200km east in the city of Fez, only days after it had handed a life sentence to Frenchman Pierre Robert for plotting terrorist attacks.

Nearly 100 people are being prosecuted in Moroccan courts either for terror-related offenses or for association with Salafia Jihadia, a banned Islamist group blamed for the May 16 attacks which killed 45 people, including 12 suicide bombers.

2. While it wouldn't be terribly out of the ordinary...

...for the Moroccan judicial system to abuse its power, 33 innocents did die in last May's bombings.

"In five nearly simultaneous attacks, booby-trapped cars exploded outside an international hotel, a Jewish cultural center and an Italian restaurant, and the suicide attackers detonated their bombs at a Spanish club and an abandoned Jewish cemetery, all in downtown Casablanca."

Not everyone who's "defined" as a terrorist is simply someone "unliked" by the powers that be. There are bad guys out there.
