Israel Gears Up for Burst of Far-Right Anger at Pullout
By Greg Myre

Jerusalem, Feb. 19 -
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is increasingly denounced as a traitor. Israeli government ministers are receiving death threats. Protesters have accosted senior politicians and yelled at them during public appearances.

Far-right Israelis are growing increasingly strident in the months leading up to the planned withdrawal of Jewish settlers from the Gaza Strip this summer. Many Israelis are drawing parallels to the period of inflamed passions that preceded the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was killed by a nationalist who rejected Mr. Rabin's concessions to the Palestinians.

Mr. Sharon, a supporter of the settlers for decades, has been the target of their wrath since last year, when he announced his plan to evacuate all 8,500 settlers from Gaza and several hundred from the West Bank.

Israel's security services have not cited any evidence of specific plans for violence against Mr. Sharon, but senior Israeli officials are calling for pre-emptive steps like detention without trial, which is permitted under Israeli law. The practice, known as administrative detention, has been widely used against suspected Palestinian militants, but only rarely against Israelis.

2. Wow...
I wish I could repeatedly praise a rightwing POS on a liberal site and still claim to be progressive.

Then again, no I don't.

6. newyorican...
dont be so "wrapped up" in ideologies to ignore good things happening on the ground. Being blind to good events because you disagree with the ideologie of the "doer" or not supporting events that you agree with simply because you "dont like or agree" with the one who is doing it is very foolish.

This "holding on to ones "principles" never works in our daily lives, that same reality should be applied to real politics as well.

8. We are so wrapped up with Evangelical Righties and Neocons
that we forget that historically conservatives were the party of "Business" and, to quote President Eisenhower's Secretary of Defense (former GM CEO Charles E. Wilson) -- "I have always believed that what is good for GM is good for America, and conversely what is good for America is good for GM."

And, not all business is defense business. Lots of civilian businesses (that aren't even "dual use").

Even without "disinvestment" -- the ongoing hostilities are taking a toll on the economies - in Israel, on the West Bank, in Gaza, in Egypt, in Lebanon, in Syria, in Jordan. It is not "disinvestment" or "sanctions" - it is "war risk premium."

And "war risk premium" is grinding down the civilian economies in in Israel, on the West Bank, in Gaza, in Egypt, in Lebanon, in Syria, in Jordan.

And, the "war risk premium" is slowing kicking in across the Muslim world -- even Qatar, even Malaysia, even Indonesia. And that is hurting economies - and job opportunities. And lack of opportunity creates frustration. And frustration breeds jihadism.

10. Livnat's threat
Settlers threatened to dig up Minister Livnat's daughter, who died of cancer. They did the same thing to Sharon with his wife Lily. These are the religious people!
