Dahlan: Arafat is a dog and liar
Beginnings of a Palestinian civil war, perhaps? I searched for something english but couldn't find anything.

(the blue text)

Link: http://images.maariv.co.il/channels/1/ART/529/076.html (second paragraph)

The story is short and essentially says Mohammaed Dahlan told Israeli and American officials over the weekend that Arafat is working to "torpedo" Abbas etc. He specifically says he is a "dog and a liar", although that might be a translation difference.

It also says the PA arrested 19 smugglers and closed two tunnels which were being used to bring in weapons from Egypt to Rafah on Saturday. It mentions that this was done "in front of TV cameras", however (making the obvious inference).

The main story before this section is that Arafat has said he is "the only one" who can rein in the militants and he should be "given a chance".

2. The third section provides your answer
Expel him!

That solves all the problems, right? :eyes:

9. As many chances as his people
want him to have. Let's hope for their sake that he delivers. If he doesn't then it is time for the people to vote him out. Dahlan and Abu Mazen can then be candidates for the leadership. Isn't democracy what we want the people of the Middle East to practice?

13. It is a little more problematic than that...
A majority of the palestinians donot want him nor the PA, but they don't have any other good options so they simpy don't vote.

19. Do you mean
Jamal (I'm not sure if that's his first name) Barghouti? Yes, he has been in jail in Israel for quite some time now. I forgot the reason they put him in jail. He seems smart, capable and very electable.
Could it be that Israel doesn't want him to become a or the leader of the Palestinians?

20. Marwan
and yes, his positive qualities are probably exactly the reasons for his being held.

22. It really is too bad
Edited on Tue Aug-26-03 03:27 PM by QuietStorm

I read through a little of the site violet placed the link for, "Free Barghouti." And it seems there are questions here too in regards to the circumstances of his "kidnapping". Israel had no jurisdiction in the Area he was picked up from. So once again there exists the matter of violation. Really a shame some of the more disturbing aspects of this conflict, which seems now a war on a whole people, more so than ever before, but I am relatively new to the topic.

21. Answer above this post (thanks Aidoneus)
And yes, his positive qualities are exactly why Israel wants him in jail. He speaks English and Hebrew fluently, has close connections to the Israeli peace movements, was born into the occupation (unlike Mr Egypt Arafat) and he believes in a two-state solution and the right of Israel to exist.

All that is very dangerous. Not to mention the fact he could probably rein in Hamas etc because he has a massive amount of political credibility as well as a popular "street" reputation.

His trial is no better than the show trials the Soviets used to have.

10. Yes, he should
because until the people vote Arafat out he is still their leader. We don't have to like him but while he is their leader he's the one we have to deal with. Other countries have been telling Washington this, and now, finally, after ignoring him for quite some time he's invited for talks.

11. Agreed.
I do wonder what is up with the Powell talks,
seems a bit of a reversal,
and I don't believe they are all of a sudden being entirely
candid with us.
But it's interesting considering the rhetoric coming from
the GOI about Arafat: kill or expel.

14. while in the meantime Powell has INVITED HIM TO WASHINGTON

IN LBN ARTICLE NOW. Well maybe this is his change? but must he go to washington first before they give him a chance. Something is twisty. Perhaps because it is late. I don't know. I thought expelling him was being discussed? Now comes an invite from Washington?

16. I was pleasantly surprised
to learn that Arafat has been invited to the US. It was idiotic for the champion of democracy to ignore an elected leader and to try impose another leader on the people of another country (Abu Mazen).

17. I agree

I thought the brokering in leaders was not necessarily the greatest idea. I just thought it odd as I had already read through the articles suggesting that there was talk of him being expelled. Whatever that means. I can not imagine would be so stupid as to assassinate him, at first the thought crossed my mind. The US has been pretty consistent with Sharon in terms of having had boycotted him. Who knows. We wait we watch.
