PA to expedite trial of collaborators with Israel
The Palestinian attorney general said on Monday he would speed up prosecution of dozens of suspected collaborators with Israel and search for those who helped Israel kill Hamas leader Abdel Aziz Rantisi on April 17. Fifty-three alleged informers are in Palestinian custody, awaiting trial.

Rantisi, the successor of Hamas founder Sheik Ahmed Yassin, himself assassinated by Israel, had taken extreme precautions, but Israel spotted him during a rare visit to his home and killed him in a missile attack.

Hamas declared after Rantisi's death that it would not disclose the name of his replacement, to shield him from Israeli attack. However, speculation centered on Zahar, once Yassin's personal physician and for years one of the most visible and uncompromising Hamas spokesmen.

more like 53 scapegoats.

The fine PA Judicial system at work. Can you say "rail-roaded"??

Can wait to see HRW, Amnesty International and ICJ have a field
day with this.

2. BTW....
"Fifty-three alleged informers are in Palestinian custody, awaiting trial."

Suddenly the PA has jails.......and all this time we've been
told "they dont have any jails".

Go figure.

3. Hey, they are the lucky ones
They actually get trials. The PA usually doesn't do that.

7. Gee, I wonder if our fellow DUers got lost on their way to I/P.
It's such an obscure, out-of-the-way place. ;-)

Is this related to the story about how Israel has moles up the
wazoo in Palestinian organizations?

Is that putting pressure on the Arafat to pretend he is doing
something about it?

Is the PA actually in the position or pretending to protect
Hamas from the government of Israel?

Edit: I believe this is the first time I have heard that the
PNA has an Attorney General sort of person.

10. There Is, Sir, Likely A Good Deal Of Pretense Here
It is hard to imagine Arafat has the slightest interest in protecting Hamas; my own supposition is that the information concerning Rantisi came from the P.A. security appart in Gaza.

There is certainly a good deal of double-agentry going on, and the various Arab Palestinian bodies do not seem to be very good at spotting them. It seems many of the people picked up as collaborators are personal enemies of people in the security detachment, or owners of desireable properties and businesses....

12. Somewhat my point.
I doubt this popped up by coincidence right now.
And I doubt this is more than political posturing.
No doubt this is quite an imposition to deal with when
he's trying to prepare for his imminent demise.

14. There Was A Notice Some Days Ago, My Friend
That the wanted militants sheltering about his headquarters in Ramalleh had been evicted, or perhaps decided the place was no longer safe on their own. The straws are leaning in a variety of directions....

It does not seem likely to me he will be killed any time soon; who would there be to blame for lack of progress with his absence?

17. Who can say?
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 11:14 PM by bemildred
My tentative conclusion at present is that this sudden killing
of leaders is all a distraction, admittedly convenient, a gift
to Mr. Bush, who needs to draw attention away from the mess in
Iraq, in recompense for his recent kindnesses to Mr. Sharon WRT
the "withdrawal plan". But with so many liars at work one
can never be sure. I do find the various theories to the effect
that they are not working in concert amusing.

Edit: and I do share you skepticism about Arafat's imminent demise.

18. If Your Definintion Of Concert, Sir
Includes lying barefaced to one another, and double-dealing wherever it is imagined it can go undetected, and simultaneously attempting to guess just how the other is doing the same to them, and making allowances for it, then certainly they are. Doubtless, they sit together for strategy sessions as well....

What a world, what a world. You may take it from me, Sir: there is no honor among thieves....
