Mubarak rejects idea of Egyptian security role in Gaza
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has rejected the idea of an Egyptian security role in the Gaza strip, describing it as a trap that would lead to conflict with the Palestinians and possibly the Israelis.

"It's a trap set for us because we would find ourselves in a situation of confrontation with the Palestinians," he told the Paris newspaper Le Figaro in an interview published on Monday.

"And, if there is a problem, we could even find ourselves in conflict with the Israelis," he added.

Israeli security sources said last month that Israel had held talks with Egypt about ceding security control to the Egyptians over a corridor on the Egypt-Gaza border as part of a plan to evacuate Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip.

1. Smart man....
Not many would want to get themselves in the middle of this. Mubarak has the foresight to see what can happen.

2. Again rejects a solution
When a man who has supposedly worked for a compromise rejects involvement, that has far-reaching implications.

Arms are being smuggled from Egypt into Gaza, and he rejects any role in stopping this transfer? Not so smart man.

16. It's not so much a solution....
As more targets.

The fact that they are arabs and Muslims like the palistinians does look like it would be a plus in dealing with the palistinians, and normaly I would agree... but how long before one side or the other decides to shoot across/through the egyptian peacekeepers? Doesn't matter which side starts/continues the conflict, It's a no win situation for the egyptians once it starts. There is no way they can remain neutral and please either side.

A UN force would be better suited to the task IMO.

3. The bottom line
Another Arabic leader that wants no part of helping the Palestinians.

They might even be asked to provide jobs for the Palestinians or some humanitarian help. Can't have that. Can anybody say Jordan deja vu?

12. besides the total irrelevance
of what I do or don't get it, it was a simple question - who is the "they" you are referring to?

Although I can understand Mubarak's stand on this particular issue.

If the political leadership of the Islamic world could stand united in action, not just with empty words, on behalf of palistine, it would be a much differnt situation.

Instead of lining the pockets of the elete, monies could have been used in humanaterian aid, and political pressure could have been applied to both sides, and the US, to reach a peace.

Alas, many Arab and Muslim leaders are as corrupt and greedy as their western counterparts.
