Arafat orders investigation into PA financial corruption

Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat has ordered an investigation into financial wrongdoing and the embezzlement of millions of dollars in two PA ministries – the Ministry of Sports and Youth and the Ministry of Transportation.

The case concerning the Ministry of Sports and Youth was revealed following two reports submitted to the Palestinian Legislative Council earlier this week on corruption, mismanagement, abuse of power, and other illegal practices in the ministry. One of the reports, prepared by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), concludes that senior officials ran the ministry as a private business.

Minister of Sports and Youth Salah Ta'mari, who was appointed to the job recently, said he was shocked by the revelations. "I briefed President Arafat on the contents of this report and another one prepared by the General Control Institution," he said. "I asked for permission to refer the case to the prosecutor-general and the cabinet for further investigation."

The Minister was shocked, really shocked and threatened to quit if the morally challenged Arafat didn't investigate these charges. I don't think the gentleman will be on Arafat's short list for his next security minister.

4. Ah so it doesn't matter that he does something illegal
or is involved in corruption, the ammount of money involved now matters. So much for principles. Thank you for clearing that out...

8. PA official arrested for Arafat dig - follow up info, I believe
A senior Palestinian Authority official who was arrested last week for criticizing PA Chairman Yasser Arafat in public said over the weekend that he is being held in solitary confinement at the offices of the PA's Criminal Investigations Force in Ramallah.

Muhammad Muqbel, director-general of the PA Ministry of Sports and Youth and a member of the Palestine National Council (the PLO's parliament-in-exile), said the decision to arrest him came directly from Arafat.

I can't keep track of the comings and goings of the PA ministers, but it appears that Arafat is taking lessons from shrub & asswipe and has his own Guantanamo(sp)Bay.

11. LOL, Yasser sounds like ahnold schvantzenagger....
who promised in the final days before the recall election, to investigate himself for the allegations against him for groping. He rescinded that a few days after he was so-called inaugurated.

13. This investigation will last...
Oh about as long as it takes for Yasser to think it's been forgotten, then will quietly be dumped.

14. I already don't have faith in Arafat.
Especially after reading up on this one. I got it from a pro-Israeli site, but they got their information form the Washington Post.

It consists of the rawest incitement to murder, as in this sermon by Arafat-appointed and Arafat-funded Ahmad Abu Halabiya broadcast live on official Palestinian Authority television early in the Intifada. The subject is "the Jews." (Note: not the Israelis, but the Jews.) "They must be butchered and killed, as Allah the Almighty said: 'Fight them: Allah will torture them at your hands.' ... Have no mercy on the Jews, no matter where they are, in any country. Fight them, wherever you are. Wherever you meet them, kill them.'"

It sounds like Arafat can't be trusted at all. At the same time, I fear that taking him out is going to just make violence worse with the Palestinians.
