Right, left dismiss Sharon Likud speech as mere talk
with the interest in the Likud platform the Likud convention and Ariel Sharon's comments may be of interest. While Sharon is a Likud member, he is the head of a coalition government. As such, his responsibility to the coalition agreement, and responsibility to all Israeli citizens, is on a higher platform than the Likud position alone. His role is to steer a course between the conflicting demands of the various interests involved. The Likud is a political party, not the GOI

Leaders of leftist and rightist parties Tuesday dismissed as mere talk Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Monday night speech to the Likud party convention, in which Sharon, speaking over booing from the party's far-right flank, said Israel "will have to relinquish some Jewish settlements" as part of any final peace agreement with the Palestinians.

More booing greeted the prime minister when he said that his plan to disengage from the Palestinians was the best plan for Israel from a security standpoint, and that the the government would help establish an "independent Palestinian state" if terror is uprooted.

"If we receive security, we will give - give a lot," Sharon said. "If the terrorist infrastructures will be dismantled from the root, if the incitement stops, then the government of Israel under our leadership, under Likud leadership, will be prepared to do its part to make possible the establishment of an independent Palestinian state."
