Hamas will not back UN bid, support statehood: Haniya
<snip>

"Hamas on Sunday said it would not back a UN membership bid, and warned that no Palestinian leader had a mandate to sacrifice fundamental Palestinian rights.

Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniya, speaking in Gaza, said the group also continued to support the establishment of a Palestinian state on any part of "historical Palestine" but would not seek to disrupt the UN bid.

His comments came as Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas heads to New York to submit a formal bid for UN membership for a Palestinian state on the lines that existed before the 1967 Six Day War.

Speaking to a meeting of the Palestinian legislative council, Haniya warned that Palestinian rights must be protected.

"There is no mandate for any Palestinian leadership to infringe on Palestinian national rights, nor is there a mandate for any Palestinian actor to make historic concessions on Palestinian land or the right of the Palestinians, foremost among them the right of return," he warned.

"Given this position, we reiterate our rejection of this bid," he added."

1. Hamas: We may back Palestinian state that does not recognize Israel's existence
Gaza strongman Ismail Haniyeh reiterates criticism of Abbas-led statehood bid at UN, saying no Palestinian leader has the mandate to forfeit 'one inch' of historic Palestine.
By Haaretz

Hamas supports the formation of an independent Palestinian state that does not recognize Israel's existence and which does not concede "one inch" of historical Palestine, Hamas' Gaza leader said on Sunday.

Last week, Hamas voiced its objection to an upcoming Palestinian bid to gain recognition at the United Nations, saying that such an effort infringes on the Palestinian refugees' right of return.

The move was not based on principles and "Hamas and other factions are not part of this step and do not support it," Salah al-Bardaweel, a senior Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, told a workshop in Gaza City.

Speaking to the Palestinian legislative council in Gaza, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was quoted by the French news agency AFP as reiterating his movement's opposition to the Palestinian Authority move at the UN, adding however that Hamas would support an independent Palestine on only part of what it considered to be "historic Palestine" if that state would adhere to core Hamas principles.

"We repeat today that we are with the establishment of a Palestinian state on any liberated part of Palestinian land that is agreed upon by the Palestinian people, without recognizing Israel or conceding any inch of historical Palestine,” Haniyeh was quoted by AFP as saying.

Elaborating on the main objection to the PA-led bid at the UN, Haniyeh reiterated the Hamas position that there could be "no mandate for any Palestinian leadership to infringe on Palestinian national rights, nor is there a mandate for any Palestinian actor to make historic concessions on Palestinian land or the right of the Palestinians, foremost among them the right of return."

“Given this position, we reiterate our rejection of this bid,” he added, saying, however, that Hamas would “not place obstacles in the way of the establishment of a Palestinian state with full sovereignty.”

Hamas, which seized control of the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2007, opposes the general line adopted by Abbas, and in particular peace negotiations with Israel.

The movement is under a Western diplomatic boycott for refusing demands to renounce violence, honor past Israeli-Palestinian agreements and recognize Israel's right to exist.

3. Poll: Majority of Palestinians believe UN statehood bid will succeed
More than half of the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza believe that Palestinian Authority's bid to gain statehood at the United Nations will succeed, a poll said on Sunday, adding that a vast majority of Palestinian respondents believed Israel would response harshly if the proposal indeed passes.

<snip>

However, in a poll conducted by the independent Palestinian firm Near East Consulting and released by the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, found that 57% of Palestinian respondents believed the UN bid would succeed, with 43% believing it would fail.

The survey, which polled 865 Palestinians over the age of 18 in both the West Bank and Gaza, also showed that 84% supported the Palestinian proposal at the UN, with 67% believing that the Palestinian Authority was capable of running an independent Palestinian state.

In addition, the Near East Consulting survey indicated that 90% of those polled believed Israel will exact harsher measures on the Palestinians in response to the UN bid, with 87% believing that a statehood bid could garner a harsh American response.

Interesting that you seem to believe Hamas represents the Palestinians in this or at least the majority of Palestinians

also it should be noted that Hamas, Israel, and the US all seem to agree about the UN bid

4. Unfortunately they have 2 illegitimate governments

And they can not agree on this project.

The only solution seems to be the 2 state solution :
1. West Bank and 2. Gaza

5. 2 illegitimite governmants? so the PA is not in your opinion a legitimate government?
however the PA will be seen as the legitimate government of the Palestinian people both in Gaza and the West Bank

but once again it strange to see how much Israel and its supporters have in common with Hamas on this issue
