Haaretz survey: Half of public thinks gays are deviants
Almost half of the Israeli population believes that homosexuality is a perversion. A Haaretz-Dialog poll, conducted under Prof. Camil Fuchs finds that 46 percent of the people surveyed answered the question "Do you see homosexuality as a perversion?" in the affirmative, while 42 percent answered that it was not a perversion. Twelve percent said they did not know.

The survey also finds that 71 percent of the ultra-Orthodox population believe homosexuality is a perversion. So do 67 percent of the religious (Orthodox), 64 percent of the Arabs, 57 percent of the Russian-speaking immigrants, 44 percent of the observant (traditional) Jews and 24 percent of the secular population.

Fuchs said that a certain decline in homophobia can be seen as compared to previous surveys. An international survey conducted in 2007 revealed that the positions regarding homosexuality in Israel were less liberal than in other Western countries, but more liberal than in Russia, Ukraine and South Korea. The level of homophobia in Israel is close to the level in Bulgaria, he said.

1. Who cares what people think? It's the law that matters.
Half the US population probably thinks orthodox jews , christians, and muslims are superstitious idiots.

It's not what you think about people, it's how you treat them. It is so frustrating to hear person after person talk about tolerance issues in terms of forcing people to be whatever you idea of cool is. It's not about that, that is a stupid, unrealistic, and bigoted goal.

It's OK for my neighbor the Rabbi to think ugly words when he sees me. It's OK if I think the same thing about him. We're even allowed to say what we're thinking, though it wouldn't be polite, but the law doesn't require us to be nice or well mannered. The best situation of course, is for us both to mind our own business. Personally, I can live next door to someone for years without ever speaking.

5. the concern is that this kind of poll findings can lead to the law being changed
If you think Netanyahu or Livni would bat an eyelash before throwing Israeli LGBT's under the bus(or introducing special prohibitions against LGBT Palestinians coming to Israel)in the name of getting some ultra-nutjob party's support in a coalition, you're fooling yourself.

Remember, past Israeli prime ministers have sold out Reform Jewish Israelis in the name of those 61 votes in the Knesset.

7. No it isn't.
One of the main points that some right-wing "pro-Israeli" types have used to silence any criticism of Israeli security policy was how gay-friendly Israel supposedly is. This poll shows that THAT is now in question.

It also shows the folly of anyone making tactical alliances on anything with the right wing.

10. So, your back to making shit up. This is so tiring.
When you learn to make a legitimate point, not based on some unsubstainted opinion, then post it.

"It also shows the folly of anyone making tactical alliances on anything with the right wing." Funny, that lesson hasn't seemed to sink in with certain "pro-Palestinian" "supporters."

11. I made nothing up
The "Israel is gay-friendly" meme has been all over the place.

Are you ever going to work to challenge the hard-right homophobic capitalist crazies who've taken over the place?

This is made-up.

"The "Israel is gay-friendly" meme has been all over the place."

This is not made up.

Are you ever going to work to challenge the hard-right anti-Semitic crazies who've taken over the place?

13. It isn't made up at all. It's all over the web
And it's often been said by people who are utterly opposed to gay rights in the U.S.

14. Perhaps you don't know the meaning of gay friendly.
The definition is relative to the surroundings. LA is gay friendly. Does that mean that some thug isn't going to swing a bat at your head and call you a faggot?

9. Actually, the post you just responded to was meant to be a response
to your other post.

I wasn't arguing about the question of whether the thread was a duplicate. Sorry.
