Resisting to protect our own

Safa Joudeh writing from the occupied Gaza Strip, Live from Palestine, 5 January 2009

The evening of 3 January, we realized that if there was any truth to Israeli war minister Ehud Barak's words, it's that this invasion will be a long one. At approximately 9:15pm local time Israeli forces entered the Strip from three locations. From the east of Gaza City and the northern towns of Jabaliya and Beit Lahiya, tanks rolled into the Palestinian residential areas while Israeli F-16s created a cover from the sky. At the same time, Israeli tanks and infantry troops entered Rafah from the southeast, while tanks shelling and artillery fire rained on the Mintar area of Gaza City. Israeli warships were simultaneously barraging Gaza City from the sea. The entire Strip was surrounded and being heavily pounded by Israeli missiles and artillery fire.

Many people were not even aware that the invasion had begun, thinking the whole time that Israel had just intensified its air raids. Gaza City has been without power for a few days now and radio batteries were running out. Almost all the residents of Gaza City have been confined to their homes for over a week and all of the stores have been closed. People are relying on word of mouth to get the news, very few are lucky enough to have generators and leftover fuel.

This war is being waged against an unarmed civilian population at the most desperate and bleak time. Israel had been systematically and indiscriminately using its most advanced military capabilities against a defenseless population -- three-quarters of whom are women and children -- for eight days prior to the invasion. People are weak and dealing with a great amount of loss and frustration. This is to speak nothing of the 18-month-long siege that Gaza has already barely been able to hold up under.

For the past few days we have seen over 10 mosques, holy places of worship, bombed, frequently while people were praying inside. We have seen children being pulled out from under the rubble who looked like there was not a single bone unbroken in their small bodies. We have seen hospitals overflowing with bloody corpses and people taking their last breaths. We have seen friends on television being resuscitated at sites of Israeli air raids. We have seen entire families swept off the face of the earth in one blow, and we have seen our streets, homes, neighborhoods become unrecognizable ruins from the amount of destruction.

And yet Israel continues to blatantly and insistently affirm that the offensive is not aimed at the civilians and that it's war against the political and military wings of Hamas. Meanwhile we, the people of Gaza, are collectively experiencing a kind of terror and violence that no human being should ever endure. One almost begins to suspect that the Israeli war forces are acting on a delusion that they have created and come to believe.

Israel has come into our homes, is fighting us in our streets and is expressing its brutality against us in full force. How are we supposed to react?

All Palestinian factions have united and are out facing the enemy, using all of their military capabilities that they collectively have. Although these capabilities are incomparable to the military strength exerted by Israel, yet it has made us more certain than ever that Palestinians will fight to the very end to protect their own. It has shown us that resistance, courage and love are an integral part of the Palestinian identity that will never change despite all the hardships we endure. It has given us a moral boost, which comes at a time when we need it most.

5. This is the Charter of the Islamic Resistance
This is the Charter of the Islamic Resistance (Hamas) which will reveal its face, unveil its identity, state its position, clarify its purpose, discuss its hopes, call for support to its cause and reinforcement, and for joining its ranks. For our struggle against the Jews is extremely wide-ranging and grave, so much so that it will need all the loyal efforts we can wield, to be followed by further steps and reinforced by successive battalions from the multifarious Arab and Islamic world, until the enemies are defeated and Allah’s victory prevails. Thus we shall perceive them approaching in the horizon, and this will be known before long: “Allah has decreed: Lo! I very shall conquer, I and my messenger, lo! Allah is strong, almighty.”

Looks like peace to me

7. Remember, Hamas's goal
is not to end the occupation of lands conquered in 1967.

It is to end the "occupation" of ALL Palestinian lands: i.e. Israel.

For Hamas to be resisting against THAT occupation will lead to a hundred years more of bloodshed.

It's just plain stupidity on their part, except that hundreds and hundreds of people will die for their political ambitions.

22. Where is Hamas ?
Have you noticed something in all the news coverage coming out of Gaza? Lots and lots of injured women and children. But no Hamas gunmen. You know, those vain, brave folks who just cannot let you go by without you taking a photo of them. Where have they gone? Funny enough, the same thing happened during Israel’s war with Hezb-allah in 2006. Loads of film clips of women and crying children but no pictures of Allah’s little helpers.

They fire those little screamer rockets and beat their chests in front of the "MSM" and the obligatory allah ahkbar poetic screeds

But

when it time to stand up and be counted on by the citizens of Gaza

?

Why is that ?

Yes, I am almost sure that no uniformed military has been killed as we all have been told Israel is only targeting woman and children

8. Smart Israel has no charter. They just kill women and children, steal land,
imprison without charge or trial, deny basic human rights and destroy communities.

Quite a legacy, though!

27. Just like Canada and New Zealand
Israel, like Canada and New Zealand, has no written constitution in one single document, but rather a number of Basic Laws.

I am looking forr the part that Israel as part of those laws is to exerminate all Palistinians, Have not found that yet

9. Israel's actions are wrong. Hamas's actions are wrong.
The lives of innocents are being lost and the fabric of a society is being ripped apart. For what? Does anyone believe the reciprocal violence will cause Hamas to quit firing rockets into Israel? If anything, this whole affair will only strengthen Hamas and turn a population whose average age is 17 into candidates for Hamas recruitment.

I don't believe either side wants peace. They both need each other to survive.

10. You might be right
But if you are the weaker, you have more to lose.

It doesn't make sense for Hamas not to stop shooting rockets.

That is all Israel asks, and there wouldn't have been a single bomb dropped, and no ground incursion.

The longer Hamas keeps up the rockets, the worse it will be for the civilian population.

but even in the most horrific wars, even during the Holocaust

people still had hope for survival.

And as bad as it is in Gaza, other people have still survived worse, and still had a will to live.

30. Not for anyone with even a slight ability to put themselves in another's shoes.
My husband is from Gaza and grew up in a camp. All his family is still there. I lived there during the first intifadah, and spent time there from '95-'97. As a whole, while poor and simple, I've never met a kinder, more generous bunch of people. I'm talking about people without furniture giving presents to my Arab-American kids... unbelievable.

I hate it that Gazans are often portrayed only as wild-eyes animals. Think about the hideous conditions of food shortages, medical shortages, unemployment, poverty etc. Jesus, in this country, all it takes to set off a mob is a sport victory.

33. I am thinking about it and it makes me so very sad.
The dehumanization of a people is often used by the media and governments to sterlize war and aggression. What if people in this country, around the world, realized Gazans were decent human beings with the same thoughts, hopes and dreams as them? They focus on the radical elements in Gaza (Hamas) allows a distraction from the real tragedy of innocent loss of life.

I hope your husband's family is safe. Thanks for sharing.

I really believe tha most Palistinians are nice generous kind people and I for one have never claimed all Palistinians are "wild eyed animals" however there is a minority that has attacked Israeli civilians and have stated that Israel must be destroyed. The lack of any pushback on these people is very sad indeed.
