Aha! La Rochefoucauld provides an anwer.
I have long wondered why Israel is on the receiving end of such virulent criticism from, in particular, so many Europeans. Contrasting, for example, the hysterical hyperbole in much of Europe (particularly Germany I understand) over the (non-existent) Jenin "genocide" vs the rather placid reaction to the actual genocide occuring right now in Darfur-- has deeply puzzled me. I don't believe the answer, or the full answer, is "anti-semitism". I felt sure it was more complicated. I just read a quotation from the 17th century French author La Rochefoucauld that may provide some illumination. At least for me:

"We never forgive those whom we have most wronged".

3. There isn't anything absurd about either the conclusion or the assumption.
I notice you didn't try to debunk either one. Smart choice.

4. google finds this little gem, based on that quote...
Shorter David Neiwert: "We can forgive those who have wronged us; we cannot forgive those whom we have wronged. That’s where fascism comes from.)"
