GUNS IN THE NEWS--August 27, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

I wonder if anyone in the class can tell us what vicious group of right wing scumbags currently viciously smearing John Kerry and the Democrats also publishes a gun magazine for kids? No, Timmy, not the slime boatters, they're amateurs when they come to this disgraceful bunch....

6. We've heard proposals just that stupid and dishonest before...
In one thread they argue that there should be no federal gun control legislation because it ought to be left to the states...and in the next they boast that a gun control law in one state will be ineffective because "there are 49 other states"...

2. 2 arrested after police find gun in reach of kids (IN)
Sound familiar to anyone?

"A man and a woman are scheduled for an initial hearing next week on felony neglect of a dependent charges after a loaded gun was found at their Near-Eastside home, in the open where a child could have reached it, police said.
Willard Todd Messer, 29, and Chandra Lee Wright, 29, were arrested by Indianapolis police at their home in the 1100 block of Pleasant Street. Four children -- ages 6 months, 1, 3 and 6 -- live in the house.
Child Protection Services called police to the house Wednesday after they found feces in the house. When police checked the house, they found a loaded 9 mm handgun on a desk, according to a police report."

7. Teenager pulls gun, but officer keeps her cool (KS)
registration required...but then we'll know where you are when Dianne Feinstein starts rounding up guns bwahahahahaha....
"Even while staring past the barrel of a teenager's gun as he threatened to kill her on Wednesday, Officer Sandy Omtvedt didn't have her own well-being in mind.
She was thinking about the boy standing less than six feet away, drawing a bead on her with that loaded .25-caliber Raven.
“I thought, ‘I'm going to have to kill this man, and I don't want to do that,' ” said Omtvedt, an eight-year veteran of the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department.
That she didn't follow through is testament to a mix of her professional restraint, police training and experience. And somewhere in the Wyandotte County jail today, a 15-year-old youth can be thankful for that training, even though he's in a great deal of trouble."

8. Guns missing from storage facility (CA)
"MILLBRAE -- Federal agents are sifting through leads and other information regarding the theft of 130 guns from a public storage unit in Millbrae.
The combination of pistols, rifles, shotguns, and revolvers -- valued at $100,000 -- were stolen from Annie's Attic Self Storage, a federally licensed storage facility sometime over the last three years.
The owner, a firearms dealer who hadn't been to the Adrian Road storage facility since Dec. 6, 2001, reported his guns missing to Millbrae Police on Aug. 19, said Millbrae Police spokeswoman Chris Co.
By law, federally licensed firearm dealers must report any thefts of firearms within 48 hours. It's unclear when the owner first noticed the weapons missing before reporting it to police. "

It's a savvy, repsonsible business man who conducts inventory once every three years....especially when they peddle dangerous goods.

9. Ignore the noise:Facts show gun control a scam
Published from England too:

http://www.dominionpost.com/a/sports/2004/08/27/ax/

In the USA, where we all can own guns, homicide rates have dropped steadily for many years, and still are dropping. In England and Wales, homicide rates have
steadily increased.

Robbery rates there have also increased significantly since gun controls were put in place. In Australia, gun controls were enacted in 1987, and violent crimes are
up and robberies are increasing. Homicide rates are stable.

In America, private citizens use guns to defend themselves from criminals around 700,000 times a year. One Web site states that between 1977 and 1992, 10
states adopted right-to-carry laws for guns. In those states there was no change in suicide rates, but an 8 percent decline in murders.:toast:

12. Ice cream driver shot, stabbed (FL)
Another glorious celebration of the Second Amendment...

"TAMPA - An argument over a minor traffic accident spiraled into an attack on an ice cream truck driver Thursday that left him bleeding and reeling from a gunshot and stab wounds, according to Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies.
The man accused of attacking him was later wounded in a shootout with Hillsborough sheriff's deputies at a North Tampa apartment.
The man fired several shots at four deputies at the Lexington Apartments at 11738 N 14th St. before deputies fired back, hitting him, said Lt. Rod Reder, Sheriff's Office spokesman."

13. Domestic dispute results in gunshot, stab wounds (MD)
"Officer Derek Baliles, a police spokesman, said the 49-year-old man was a resident of the home while the 36-year-old woman lives in Point of Rocks. “We believe they had been drinking and had an argument that escalated,” he said. Baliles did not know the subject of the argument.
Both people were taken by helicopter to Suburban Hospital, Piringer said. The man had potentially life-threatening injuries and the woman suffered serious injuries.
Baliles said Thursday police believe the man shot first and the woman responded with a knife from the kitchen. "

16. Brackenridge man held for trial in NK shooting (PA)
"NEW KENSINGTON -- A Brackenridge man was ordered to stand trial Thursday for allegedly shooting at another man in New Kensington last month.
Jared Allen, 23, of Morgan Street is accused of shooting at Anthony "Scoop" Swann, 27, in a Kenneth Avenue house July 4.
Allen's preliminary hearing started July 21 with Swann testifying that he saw Allen shoot at him days after the one-time friends quarreled about their Aug. 6, 2003, arrest in Pittsburgh for allegedly selling crack cocaine and possessing firearms.
On Thursday, in the second part of the hearing, the defense called one witness who said Swann couldn't have seen anyone shooting at the house because he took cover upstairs before the shots hit. "
