GUNS IN THE NEWS--August 17, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

2. Keeping Guns Out of Children's Hands
registration required
"From 1993 through 2000, the study revealed, 22,661 children in that age group were treated in hospital emergency rooms in the United States for nonfatal injuries caused by a firearm. In four out of five cases, the injuries were inflicted by the child, a friend, a relative or another person known to the child. More than 43 percent of those injuries were accidents, and 41.5 percent were deliberate assaults.
During that same period, 5,542 children died of gunshot wounds. More than half of these deaths were homicides, 22 percent of them were suicides and the rest were accidents.
A second study published the month before in Pediatrics revealed that each year about 3,200 children who survive gunshot wounds are permanently disabled as a result.
So despite the recent decline, firearm injuries to children remain a serious public health concern, and the sooner American families and communities recognize this and do something truly constructive to counter it, the better."

3. Nine Year Old Boy Dies from Gun Shot (IA)
"A nine-year-old boy in Clayton County died in a gun accident over the weekend. Josh Heine was enjoying the last days of summer vacation at his home in rural Elkader near Mederville. The Clayton County Sheriff says Josh and his 14-year-old half-brother Donald were playing the yard Saturday night. The sheriff says it appears Donald took an unloaded shotgun from the home. He says it appears that the gun went off while Donald was loading and unloading it. Josh was killed when the blast hit him in the head.
Their father David Maker was home sleeping at the time when the shooting occurred. Officers say the father's guns did not have locks on them."

5. Suspect In Country Music Slaying Faces Court Hearing (MI)
Another idiotic celebration of the Second Amendment....

"A Lincoln Park man is charged with fatally shooting his neighbor during an argument over loud country music.
Anthony Randall told police after the shooting that he had complained several times to management about Steven Gorham's loud music, drinking and verbal abuse.
Randall told police he became upset and kicked a hole in the wall of Gorham's apartment. He says Gorham then knocked on his door several times, threatening to kill him.
Police records show that Gorham swore at his neighbor before Randall fired his rifle into his chest."

11. That'll teach Gorham the advantages of civil discourse.
I mean, dirty words, people being shot to death - pretty much equal problems, or at least they're popularly presented as such in this forum.

12. Actually, we seem to have a bunch of folks
who are gleefully looking forward to plugging their fellow citizens but have a whiny, childish public conniption over harsh language...go figure.

10. Police say shootings no accident (MI)
"Flushing — (08/16/04)-- Police don't believe it was an accident when a Flushing man fatally shot two family members Sunday evening.
The 67-year-old will be charged Tuesday morning with two counts of open murder. The man is accused of shooting and killing his 70-year-old sister and 42-year-old niece inside his Hazelton Street home.
It wasn't a secret that the suspect suffered from Parkinson's disease or that he and his sister, the executor of his estate, had conflicting opinions about where he should move.
It's believed the man was so frustrated when Ruth Ann Krebs and her daughter, Jill, visited him yesterday, he just 'snapped.' "
