Georgia man gets year in jail in campus gun case (Mass.)

NORTHAMPTON -- A four-year legal battle for an Atlanta man accused of bringing guns onto the campus of Mount Holyoke College has ended with a year-long jail sentence.

Clint Cornelius was sentenced Monday in Hampshire Superior Court after pleading guilty to possessing ammunition without a permit.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that prosecutors agreed to drop more serious charges against the 33-year-old Cornelius, including carrying a firearm without a permit and possessing a large-capacity firearm.

Cornelius had the handgun, shotgun and semi-automatic rifle, as well as ammunition, in his car when he visited a friend on the South Hadley campus in 2007. Prosecutors never alleged he planned to do any harm.

1. Know the law wherever you may roam.
It's sad to see an innocent individual victimized by gun laws, but that's the price you pay sometimes.

2. No, there should not be "a price to pay"....
when one has no threatening or harmful intent, and is merely peacefully exercising a Constitutionally protected Civil Right.

12. You'd save yourself a lot of time/energy if you quit carrying a small cache when you travel.

3. Well, this is what happens when local government has no restraints:
They deny a citizen's constitutional rights. Happened all the time. In the Jim Crow South.

Whatever that is.

Proof reader must of been on vacation.

9. LOL
Can you actually shoot that thing? I would think the lack of a spring would cause some FTF problems.

8. it's like visiting the circus here
The clowns are impressive in their antics.

I had always thought that the rallying cry of the gun militant brigade was "no more laws! enforce existing laws!"

And then when somebody tries to ...

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that prosecutors agreed to drop more serious charges against the 33-year-old Cornelius, including carrying a firearm without a permit and possessing a large-capacity firearm.

Why???

Don't we hear complaints about that here too -- bargaining away the actual firearms charges in plea deals?

He broke the fucking law. And besides, he left "the handgun, shotgun and semi-automatic rifle, as well as ammunition" in an unattended vehicle in a public parking lot. So he's both a criminal and a self-centred asshole.

10. What?
Clint Cornelius was sentenced Monday in Hampshire Superior Court after pleading guilty to possessing ammunition without a permit.

I lived in Georgia for many years. I have never heard of requiring a permit to possess ammunition, nor firearms for that matter.

The Daily Hampshire Gazette reports that prosecutors agreed to drop more serious charges against the 33-year-old Cornelius, including carrying a firearm without a permit and possessing a large-capacity firearm.

I am not aware of any limitations on magazines for firearms in Georgia.

Cornelius had the handgun, shotgun and semi-automatic rifle, as well as ammunition, in his car when he visited a friend on the South Hadley campus in 2007. Prosecutors never alleged he planned to do any harm.

Sounds like just the sort of people we should be putting in jail for a year. Not.

11. Mighty fine. Why would any rational person need 3 guns in his car (doesn't sound like he was

hunting, target shooting and/or playing army)? Maybe, he was going to militia training. Hope he enjoys jail.
