Tea Party group plans to sue Helena over gun ordinance
A group known as the Lewis & Clark's Conservative Tea Party says that its requests to address Helena's gun ordinance have fallen on deaf ears, and now they say they'll take the issue to court.

About two weeks ago, the group brought the issue up to the Helena City Commission.

At that time, commissioners said they would discuss whether or not to examine the ordinance at a later date.

Back in May, the City denied group leader Tim Ravndal's request for a public hearing and told him the proper venue to challenge the ordinance is through either the legislative process or through the court system.

1. As a direct descendent of Meriwether Clark, I'm offended that the Tea Party has hijacked...
...my ancestor's name. Can I sue them?

9. No. Don't actually have a gun, myself. I don't hunt so I never got one. But

I remember my grandpa had a bunch of rifles and shotguns though. He used to hunt pheasant back when the fields were full of them, before DDT did away with all the birds. He used to hunt deer too. And of course he fished. Just about everyone from Montana fishes, and I grew up fly-fishing. Fun times.

My family on my Mom's side goes back five generations in western Montana. And yes, I'm actually proud to be a hick from Montana. Missoula is my hometown as a matter of fact.

I don't mind when those of you from back east make fun of me. I figure you just don't really understand. And if you had any idea of the beauty I grew up seeing every day, you might just be very jealous.

But yeah we have more than our fair share of right-wing kooks and guns ARE an important part of the culture, even for some of us who are liberals. I'm all for cities and individual states restricting guns however they see fit, but I know as long as people in Montana grow up hunting, they will always want their guns. It's just such a different culture from any I've seen anywhere else I've lived in the world. I guess like anywhere else there are good people and bad people, and good parts of the culture and bad parts.

One thing I'm really proud of, about Montana, is the story of Billings and the menorahs.

17. The U.S. Constitution guaranties the rights of rural and urban folk...
"I'm all for cities and individual states restricting guns however they see fit, but I know as long as people in Montana grow up hunting, they will always want their guns."

Black people can now vote in the South, as opposed to only some Northern states prior to 1965. Cities (or for that matter, counties) and states cannot pass laws which violate their particular state's constitution, nor can they pass laws which violate the U.S. Constitution. To allow this would break down the federal system, and make a mockery of the 14th Amendment, the very font of civil rights and due-process legislation througout the 60s and 70s.

As you may know, the right to keep and bear arms is not contingent on the "culture" and "values" of some localities as opposed to others; in fact, more than 80% of gun-owners do not hunt. On a more personal note, I have never felt as safe in urban settings as I have in rural ones -- that seems a strange dichotemy.

14. Meriwether Lewis, or William Clark?
As far as I know, the two did not mate and produce offspring.

20. It is actually Meriwether Lewis who was on my grandmother's side....
...and I've always been amused at how little people really know about these two.

16. Evidently, that's not the only thing they have hijacked...
Many seem to be rather out front in their opposition to the Afghan/Iraqi wars, and have let some of their less far-right Senators know about it.

When one side is dominant, they set the terms of the debate. Or change them. Or adopt them.

8. Depends on the situation
If the power of BS works great, but they start pulling out the tire chains in July then you know Gandhi is not going to work for you that day.

How about you clap and your attacker is beamed to jail? Oh, right, you'd have to have the coordinates. Damn!
