How is this acceptable?
Edited on Mon Jun-27-11 10:42 PM by gejohnston
If Ted Nugent said something like this, there would be wall to wall coverage. Granted Nugent is more famous than this guy, but still. And why isn't he going after the drug dealers and gangsters doing the shooting and the users that are lining their pockets?
Whatever happened to peace and social justice?

During an address at an anti-gun rally in front of Chuck's, Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina's Church, exhorted the crowd to drag" shop owner, John Riggio, from his shop "like a rat" and "snuff" him. Rev. Pfleger went on to tell the crowd that legislators that vote against gun control legislation should be "snuffed" as well. As many know, "snuff" is slang for especially violent murder

1. Hey, violent rhetoric only counts when it's done by certain people against certain people.
If you aren't in the know.... you aren't the right people.

2. Yeah, angry unarmed people storming a gun shop
Yanno, the people that work there wear guns on their hips. And might just have a few guns around for "immediate use".

Not that I'm defending Nugent. He's on Colbert right now, so I'm feeling particularly nauseous.

3. Cognitive dissonance turns violent
in alot of morons...Also, that is Chicago, so he has to play to his people. He should be pushing for more responsible GUN OWNERSHIP. Chicago has seen a DROP in crime when the court ruled guns are 'legal'. Same with Washington DC. 30% or so. Case closed.

An interview with
John R. Lott, Jr.
author of More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws

Question: What does the title mean: More Guns, Less Crime?

John R. Lott, Jr.: States with the largest increases in gun ownership also have the largest drops in violent crimes. Thirty-one states now have such laws—called "shall-issue" laws. These laws allow adults the right to carry concealed handguns if they do not have a criminal record or a history of significant mental illness.

Question: It just seems to defy common sense that crimes likely to involve guns would be reduced by allowing more people to carry guns. How do you explain the results?

Lott: Criminals are deterred by higher penalties. Just as higher arrest and conviction rates deter crime, so does the risk that someone committing a crime will confront someone able to defend him or herself. There is a strong negative relationship between the number of law-abiding citizens with permits and the crime rate—as more people obtain permits there is a greater decline in violent crime rates. For each additional year that a concealed handgun law is in effect the murder rate declines by 3 percent, rape by 2 percent, and robberies by over 2 percent.

Concealed handgun laws reduce violent crime for two reasons. First, they reduce the number of attempted crimes because criminals are uncertain which potential victims can defend themselves. Second, victims who have guns are in a much better position to defend themselves.

Question: What is the basis for these numbers?

Lott: The analysis is based on data for all 3,054 counties in the United States during 18 years from 1977 to 1994.

9. as the cliche goes
about broken clocks and genetic fallacies and all of that. sharesunited and I found common ground today in this thread. Bernie Sanders and Ron Paul and I that agree that our military, including my Air Force, should be defending USA as the Constitution says and not some bullshit empire. I don't know that much about Lott. If he is right about one issue, he is right about that issue even though he may be misguided on everything else. The fact that Bernie Sanders and Ron Paul agree on one or two things, certainly does not diminish my respect for Sen Sanders nor does it make me a Ron Paul fan.

17. Yes, it's the clip of the "Holy Grail" 'How to tell a witch' segment.
Generally fitting when people try to stretch commonalities like the person you were responding to.

10. This happened back in 2007, and was discussed here:

I was amused at the time to note the selective ire of both Pfleger and certain DU members...
