Dealership: Buy Truck, Get Free AK-47

Sanford Dealership Offers Assault Rifle With Purchase

UPDATED: 10:26 am EST November 15, 2010

SANFORD, Fla -- A Sanford truck dealership is running a special promotion, offering a free AK-47 with the purchase of a used truck.

Nations Trucks, located at 3700 S. Orlando Drive in Sanford, kicked off the promotion on Veterans Day.

General sales manager Nick Ginetta said the promotion will run until the end of the month. He said anyone who purchases a truck will receive a $400 voucher to a local gun store. He said customers will have to go through the application process and qualify under state and federal laws. Ginetta said any buyers who don't want a gun will be given cash.

Ginetta said he knows the promotion is controversial, but he believes it will bring in business -- and he said it's already working. At the close of business Thursday, he said the business had 47 appointments scheduled for Friday. Normally, he said there's only three.

10. Some would say that I resemble that statement ...
but I won't take offense.

There are a lot of gun owners here in Florida. In the small town where I now live, everybody that I know has firearms. Deer hunting is a big deal here.

Also there are 767,739 valid concealed weapons permits issued by the state of Florida. So plenty of people in Florida legally "pack heat".

But while I've been living in Florida for 41 years and have enjoyed shooting on a regular basis, I have met very few "nuts". Of course, I don't label people as "nuts" merely because they own firearms or because they live in Florida.

12. They're non-automatic civilian AK-47 lookalikes, not the military automatic kind.

Think of it as a self-loading .30-30 Winchester using detachable magazines. I own one; they're nifty little rifles.

From the dealer's standpoint, it's a whole lot of PR for a very small price ($400-ish, assuming these are basic WASR's). It certainly gets more attention than "$400 cash back" would, even though that's what it amounts to.

As to misuse, rifles are the least misused category of firearm, so it's a pretty safe bet that having a few more people with clean records buying them isn't going to cause any mayhem.

5. Here in Wisconsin you can get a 12-guage shotgun with a diamond ring. Fitting, huh?

7. It's a voucher to a local gun store ...
but you could probably talk them into giving you the cash.

16. For $400?
That kind of money will get you one of those fugly Hi-Point carbines, with enough change to buy some slightly-less-fugly aftermarket furniture for it.

15. So how about that rash of shootings with Kalashnikov clones in MO since last year?
Didn't happen? Blood did not, in fact, flow in torrents down the left turn lanes? Surely that can't be right!

23. Marketing genius: Buy a truck, get a truck gun!
Great idea. I'd try to haggle a crate of ammo and chest rig... after a chat with the sales manager, of course.
