Oozies??
The crime curbing effort has collected over 1,600 guns over the past 2 years and city leaders said this is another successful year.

Mayor Byron Brown said, "We will get anything from long guns rifles, AK-47's, oozies, so we have gotten those assault weapons."

That's right - the reporter couldn't be bothered to spell the name of the gun correctly. Sad...

1. no, what's sad is that newsroom staffing has been decimated, and publishers are no longer worried
about typos.

its a dangerous time in our history where newspapers are dying, and diversity of voice is disappearing.

5. "diversity of voice is disappearing"
Perhaps you have heard of this thing called "The Internet", which allows anyone and everyone to express their opinion and news to the world?

The reason why the newspapers are dying is because the diversity of voice has become so great that the newspapers no longer have a monopoly and are lost in the great mass of voices.

8. I would disagree with your assessment.
the reason newspapers are dying is the JOA and relaxation of FCC rules on media ownership.
the internent is simply pounding the nails into an already existing coffin.

10. Print is dead.
I can't remember the last time I read a newspaper.

When we move here we started getting a paper. I had to call and get them to stop, even though we were getting it for free. Who wants a waterlogged piece of garbage dumped in their driveway they have to throw away every day?

17. IMO, traditional media dying because of the *lack* of diversity of voices.
Edited on Mon Aug-17-09 09:09 AM by benEzra
Newspapers (and traditional broadcast news) became uniformly corporatist, authoritarian, and anti-populist. Few on the left or on the right want to read constant shills for more centralization of wealth, more Authority, and the offical moral panic du jour, particularly when those writing/producing it don't even bother to get basic facts straight.

18. agreed.
that's part of what I'm saying, but that is the symptom -- the disease was collapsing of ownership regulations that allowed papers to become monopolies

19. If they are "bullet hoses" how can they be "oozies?"
I share your concern about the decline in print media quality. I have noticed, however, some regional and monthly publications which normally have Journalism 101 writers improve significantly. Maybe the veteran reporters who have been laid off are taking anything they can get.

3. Darn! I though you were suggesting a new DU award.
The Oozies would be restricted to The Lounge, and would make an award to the most saccharine posts made there...you know, the ones that just...well...ooze something.

Oh, well.

4. Reporters and the media can't be bothered by much of anything...
a little reporting on the healthcare systems of other nations would be interesting and useful.

It's just way too much effort for those who enjoy and use the First Amendment as their livelihood. Perhaps that's why they oppose the Second Amendment, as they can't believe anyone can exercise their rights responsibly. They sure don't.

6. I like the stories of people who collect worthless, nonfunctioning guns and turn them in for money
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 12:53 PM by aikoaiko

to buy functioning firearms.

I don't know how many are true, but I like those stories.

edited to add: I know some town have gotten hip and now require a working gun, but even then the standard is low. Its not like they fire the gun.

7. Some feel these gun buy back programs are a waste of time and money...

Tabarrok and others complain the programs are feel-good events that do not reduce gun crimes and are abused by gun dealers seeking to unload junk merchandise at a good price. None of the guns are turned in by criminals, Tabarrok says, and many don't even fire.

"It presents an opportunity for politicians to grandstand," he says. "This is not about being pro-gun or anti-gun. It's about which policies actually work."

***snip***

Tabarrok, who also teaches economics at George Mason University in Virginia, disputes that notion. He points to a 2004 study on firearms and violence by the National Research Council, an arm of the National Academies.

It concluded there is no evidence the buybacks reduce gun violence. It said guns usually surrendered in such buybacks "are those that are least likely to be used in criminal activities," and that replacement guns are easily obtained.

"The typical person who hands in a gun is not a criminal," Tabarrok says. "If they want to reduce crime, they ought to put more police on the streets, something we know works." emphasis mine
