The Bullcrap is strong with this one
LOL, how often do you catch a mainstream newspaper article in a lie, in the very first sentence?

http://www.news-sentinel.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090511/NEWS/905110328

75 bullets at a time?!?! I had never seen a journalist, so expose their lack of knowledge so quickly..Atleast it saves me some time, no need to read the rest of it.

Since we already know the writer does not know anything about the subject at hand.

1. The REAL idiot appears to be the Chief of police York. He's an ass.
If you knew anything about Ft. Wayne, you'd understand it. Suffice to say it isn't a town full of rocket scientists.

2. The head of the Brady Campaign probably requested York peddle the BS...
as Paul Helmke (head of the BC) is the former Republican mayor of Fort Wayne.

The article is so full of BS that it's ridiculous.

The 1994 Feinstein law banned zero semiautomatic rifles. None. Zilch. Nada. It just required that new rifles with protruding handgrips had to have smooth muzzles, and similar BS.

Also, rifle crime has stayed pretty stable as a percentage of total murders (~3%) for the past quarter-century. Rifles aren't a significant crime problem in the United States and never have been.

3. Notice that semi-automatic and assault weapon are used interchangeably
No mention of appearance or magazine capacity, so all semi-autos are equally evil.

At least there is honesty in not hiding the intent to ban all semi-autos.

4. You can get a 75-round drum magazine for AKs...
and a 90-round drum for AR-15s and Mini-14s.

Not that is person is knowledgeable on this process. It sounds like the author read a Brady press release and tried to fit bits and pieces of it into the article.

It's got enough truth scattered around it to make the errors and false implications credible.

For example, the stats on the side of the column:

Semiautomatic rifle seizures

1999

Semiautomatics: 3

Total guns seized: 549

2000

Semiautomatics: 4

Total guns seized: 459

2001

Semiautomatics: 7

Total guns seized: 509

2002

Semiautomatics: 8

Total guns seized: 462

2003

Semiautomatics: 2

Total guns seized: 484

2004

Semiautomatics: 7

Total guns seized: 390

2005

Semiautomatics: 8

Total guns seized: 444

2006

Semiautomatics: 29

Total guns seized: 723

2007

Semiautomatics: 20

Total guns seized: 612

2008

Semiautomatics: 31

Total guns seized: 663

Total guns siezed in 2004 and 2005 were WAY less than in any year from 1999-2003, when the AWB was in effect! And even in the "bad" years, all semiautomatic rifles (sporting-derived or military-derived) are a whopping 5% or less of all siezures. And what kind of gun is most-used in murder? What kind of gun is used for 85% of all gun murders? HANDGUNS!!!!!

20. Hell, I attended Catholic School in the '50's and I don't remember
any Latin except "Cave Canem".
(But I can still halfway understand Latin-based languages....I once held a conversation in French, and I have never studied it.)

10. "It's got enough truth scattered around it to make the errors and false implications credible."
Exactly. It also has enough fear dabbled about it to make mommas squeeze their babies just a little tighter. This is very effective propaganda -- combining fear with some common sense truths -- that is hard to defend against. We spend a lot of time 'undoing' this by education, instead of staying on our message. We need to turn that train around. Find the key statistics and just repeat them.

19. I noticed those numbers as well
As of 2006, the overall number of guns seized by Fort Wayne PD rose sharply, not just semi-auto rifles. That suggests to me that the cause might be a surge in violent crime, or more likely a change in policy in the police department.

I knew right away after reading the title of your OP exactly what "piece" you were referring to.

And yeah, its a doozie.

I actually feel sorry for those of the gun control camp who are stuck with the bozos that came up with this.

No, I'm not joking. Its THAT bad.

12. Love this quote:
"“A dedicated bad guy is probably always going to be able to get a gun, but why do we have to make it easier for them?” he asked"

Since dedicated bad guys are going to always be able to get a gun anyway, why make it harder on law abiding citizens?

13. "why make it harder on law abiding citizens?" Simple reason:
You and I are the real enemy - politically active gun owners. Common stick-up artists and gang bangers operate regardless of which right wing or left wing politics are in force at any given time.
