Massive haka halts traffic - NZ
Wellington - At least 10 000 mainly indigenous Maori, many performing the traditional haka war dance, brought New Zealand's capital to a standstill on Wednesday with a protest against government plans to nationalise the seabed and foreshore.

Prime Minister Helen Clark refused to greet the "hikoi," or protest walk, after saying earlier this week it was led by "haters and wreckers".

Her Labour government will on Thursday resume parliamentary debate on the Seabed and Foreshore Bill, which puts the coastal areas into state ownership.

Many Maori believe they have customary ownership of the areas and consider the bill amounts to confiscation of their property.
