THE State Government has approved a doubling in coal export capacity, a move that Greenpeace says contradicts the Government's position on climate change.
The Minister for Planning, Frank Sartor, gave the go-ahead for a new coal export terminal for Newcastle costing $922 million and for the Kooragang Island terminal to be upgraded at a cost of $78 million.
The two approvals allow capacity at Newcastle, the world's largest coal exporting port, to more than double, to 209 million tonnes a year. "Demand for coal continues to grow, largely driven by developing Asian markets," Mr Sartor said.
The approvals came as the Premier, Morris Iemma, emerged from the premiers' conference in Canberra promising to aim to meet a greenhouse reduction target, even though the plan did not have the support of the Prime Minister, John Howard.
