Steelworkers, Sierra Club Unite On Illegal Timber Trade Case - 03/16/07

By Doug Cunningham

The United Steelworkers and the Sierra Club are uniting in a trade case to limit the trading of certain paper products made from illegally logged timber. Dave Foster is Executive Director of the Blue-Green Alliance, a joint effort by the USW and the Sierra Club. Foster says Indonesian rain forest is being cleared illegally to make paper products for international trade, threatening both U.S. paper mill jobs and the global environment.

: “This is a problem of really global proportions. It's not just the jobs of those 22 paper mills in the United States that produce this product. It's really a deforestation issue that goes right to the heart of the world's inability to successfully grapple with global warming."
