Gary Elliott has developed power plants around the world. Now he’s energized by a new idea.

He and three other Marco Island residents have teamed up and plan to build ethanol plants in Southwest Florida.

The group has founded Catalytics LLC to make what’s known as cellulosic ethanol. That’s ethanol that comes from agricultural and other waste, from trees and branches to citrus peels and sugar cane stalks.

The company sees a market in waste coming from local landscape gardeners and growers. Instead of going to the landfill, the trees, branches and sugar cane stalks could feed into an ethanol plant.
