Greenpeace admits it failed in its challenge to Treasurer Peter Costello - to get him to mention the words "climate change" for the first time in 11 budget speeches. The green group says the treasurer is living in denial about the problem it says is the greatest identifiable risk to Australia's future.
"Cyclones and drought were some of the first words across Mr Costello's lips in last night's budget speech," Greenpeace spokesman Danny Kennedy said in a statement. "The treasurer certainly seems to be aware that climate change is hurting Australians and our economy, yet still no mention of climate change followed.
"In fact, in 11 years, Mr Costello still hasn't managed to say the words in a budget speech."
Mr Kennedy said Mr Costello had unwittingly acknowledged the cost of climate change, which scientists agreed would further intensify tropical storms, by giving $260 million in relief to businesses and farmers who suffered from Tropical Cyclone Larry.
