Americans riding a bicycle to work up 44% since 2000

"Rising gasoline prices don’t much worry Rob Gusky. Gusky, a 48-year-old process engineer at a Kimberly-Clark facility in Neenah, Wisconsin, travels to work year-round by bicycle, making the 17-mile round trip even in winter. (Friday’s low in Neenah was 20 degrees.) When it snows, he switches to a bike with studded tires.

Why? Because biking to work is good for his health, good for his pocketbook and good for the planet. What’s not to like?

Gusky, who has been a committed bicycle commuter since 2008, when gas prices first topped $4 a gallon, has led efforts to spread the practice through Kimberly-Clark. Spurred on by bicyclists inside the company, Kimberly-Clark now sponsors a competition among its employees to promote bike riding, a statewide program called 'Get Up and Ride,' a fall biking event to raise money for the United Way, and free bike tune-ups during Bike to Work week. The company provides ample bike parking and showers at its offices worldwide."

7. Me too
It can get into the 20s, at times, here in the Pacific Northwet. Rain pants make a big difference.

We don't get enough snow for me to consider studded snow tires; however, if I'm working next winter I'll still likely be biking, and I may have to invest in a winter bike.

2. Not such a good idea in FL
We have one of the highest rates of bicycle fatalities in the country down here.
The culture of this state (or lack thereof) is all about the motor vehicle. There is little regard for bicyclists.
In February alone, there were three (3) bicycle/automobile accidents with all three of the cyclists suffering fatal injuries - one of whom I miss terribly. All three accidents occurred in the relatively close stretch of Jupiter to Vero Beach.

4. I haven't been to FL for awhile
but if I remember correctly, the roads are relatively narrow with lots of traffic.

I would be very surprised if the culture wasn't changing. There's enough fed money involved to make it attractive to stripe bicycle lanes or build dedicated bike paths.

3. K&R- We will see gas at over $5 a gallon this summer...there will be
a lot of alternatives being used.
