Indian Point Unit 2 Cruising Down Davis-Besse Boulevard

| by Dave Lochbaum | nuclear power safety |

During every refueling outage since 1993 at Indian Point Unit 2 (IP-2) in New York, radioactively contaminated water has been leaking into containment at rates between two and ten gallons per minute. The NRC is well aware of the problem and the repeated failures to correct it.

A recent NRC inspection report for IP-2 contains many items that closely resemble conditions at Davis-Besse prior to the belated discovery of the football-sized hole in its reactor vessel head.

A UCS letter sent to R. William Borchardt, NRC Executive Director for Operations, calls attention to those parallels, and calls for the NRC to take whatever measures are needed to remedy these problems before IP-2 conducts another refueling.

The letter is at http://www.ucsusa.org/assets/documents/nuclear_power/20100623-ip2-ucs-edo-refueling-cavity-leak.pdf

2. It is only a matter of time until one of these old reactors kills a lot of people
The NRC is in bed with the nuclear industry as sure as the MMS was/is with the oil industry. Only a fool can't see that. How many people live within a few miles of Indian point anyway, a half million, a million or more, I just looked and wiki says 8 million. 25 miles sure isn't going to be very far when one of these reactors blows its top. Talk about a catastrophe waiting to happen this is. :grr:
