Provide jobs for people w/ disabilities while recycling old VHS/cassettes tapes and floppy
disks-- and even their storage cases!

I've been packing up to move out of the house we've lived in for over 15 years. Faced with boxes and boxes of old VHS & cassette tapes and scores of computer floppy disks, I went searching for a more green solution than throwing them into the trash. And I found one!

Alternative Community Training, Inc. (ACT) in Columbia, MO "provides personalized support to individuals with disabilities as they become full and valued members of the community by accessing opportunities available to all citizens."

They also hire people with disabilities to erase and repackage old tapes and computer media.

You fill out the online form and they email you back a confirmation to print and mail in with your donation. They then calculate the value and issue you a receipt for your taxes.

For about $25 in postage (tax-deductible!), I kept a huge box of stuff out of the landfill. It made parting with the mixed-tapes I'd been hanging onto since college a little more bearable. ;)

Details on the donating here: http://actrecycling.org/donations/howtodonate.asp

They also take CDs and DVDs, if you just can't seems to Freecycle "Celine Dion's Greated Hits" and/or "Speed II." :)

3. They are erased and repackaged for bulk sale.
I didn't know there was anyone out there still using tapes/disks, but apparently there is.

I even called the office in MO to double-check that they still wanted VHS/audio/floppies and not just CDs/DVDs and they assured me they did.

2. Very nice
As a parent of a child with Down Syndrome, I appreciate the support. We are just beginning transition planning for my daughter and career opportunities are few and far between.

4. Welcome to DU, Sixties guy!
:hi:

I'm honored to have received your first post.

My adult cousin moved into a group home about a year ago, but has so far been unable to secure a job due to the severity of her challenges, so I am very aware of how frustrating the process can be for a parent.

Will think good thoughts for you and your daughter.
