TEPCO plans 10-MW solar plant to cut CO2 emissions

Tue Jan 27, 2009 12:15am EST

TOKYO, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said on Tuesday that it plans to build a 10-megawatt solar power plant in central Japan, as Asia's biggest utility works to meet targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

TEPCO's emissions have jumped since it had to indefinitely shut down Japan's biggest nuclear plant after a July 2007 earthquake, as it has been forced to increase output from oil-fired and other thermal power plants.

TEPCO has agreed with the government of Yamanashi prefecture, west of Tokyo, to construct the plant with the aim of beginning partial operations in the year starting in April 2011. They aim to generate about 12 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year, helping to reduce CO2 emissions by about 5,100 tonnes annually, TEPCO said in a statement.

TEPCO did not reveal the projected costs for building the plant.

3. The largest HE dam in th world only has double the output.
Getting 10MW from solar is fantastic.

4. i think the 3 gorges dam produces 20 GW not MW.......
10MW is roughly 5-6 windturbines worth of electricity....

5. As someone else has pointed out ...
... the largest HE dam in the world has over 2000 times the output.
(I just wasn't sure if I'd misread the OP article or if you'd
dropped a few orders of magnitude :-) )

FWIW, if everything goes according to plan, they aim to generate about
12 million kilowatt-hours of electricity a year (i.e., 12GWh in a year).

In July 2008, the Three Gorges Dam generated 10.3 TWh of electricity
(i.e., over 10 TWh in a month = over 10,000GWh in 1/12 of a year or
10,000 times more energy than the solar site's goal in a year).

:hi:

6. I thought that output was huge.

I stand corrected. I did a quick wiki search and got the 3GD figure of 22,500 MW. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Gorges_Dam

...and forgot to notice the zeroes.

I appreciate the info and it makes a ton of sense. Always feel free to correct my ignorance. :hi:
