1. Hype. Massively complicated recovery.
The speculation of oil in place is one thing, as it is in many cases, but what is important to the market is flow rate. In the Bakken field, the difficulties of extraction almost guarantee a flow rate that will make little difference to the market. Here and there people will get lucky and rich, but it is a sideshow to the primary markets.
