Coal mine explosion in Ukraine; 1 dead, 13 missing
Clean Coal is the future. And Ukraine is the West Virginia of Europe.

Posted 7:06 am EDT

DONETSK, Ukraine, Jun. 9, 2008 (Reuters) — The Ukrainian government said 21 more coal miners had been rescued on Monday after an explosion at a pit, but reporters at the scene said efforts to bring them to the surface were still under way.

...

A total of 23 miners have been rescued or found alive since the explosion at the pit northeast of Donetsk, the centre of the coalfield. One miner was found dead and 13 are still missing.

Five workers on the surface were injured in the blast.

Here's the punch line: when you use "Donetsk coal mining accident" as Google search terms, this comes up FIFTH in the results. I haven't seen it in the MSM today, but I'm sure that's just because they want to report the story exactly right.

I wonder how this would have been reported if a different kind of energy-producing rock was involved.

2. Would it have mattered?
I don't think that ANY coal-mining accident posts I have made have gotten more than two or three responses.

This is also the first time that I criticized the media for its selective attention to energy issues, but it isn't the first time that a post of mine was criticized for doing so.

So whose is the shame?
