Convert a Saturn Sky to all Electric for $25k - Cinncinati Company
Cincinnati company is converting Saturn Sky's for $25k - first run of 300 with 212 left. Claim approx $.03/mile fuel cost.

0 to 60 in under 6 sec.
150 miles range

They will sell you the car if you don't have one.

http://www.ampmotorworks.com/index.html

What they don't have > http://www.ampmotorworks.com/html/wedonthave.html

But if you drive 15,000 miles a year in a car that gets 15 mpg, it would take about 7 years to break even.

1000 gallons at $4 x 7yrs - ($.03 x 15000 x 7 yrs)

Plus no oil changes, coolant, transmission fluid, etc.

Just rotate and change tires!!

They claim 150 miles on a charge.

Let's see, a Saturn Sky will set you back 25,000 plus another 25,000...

3. Buy a used one
Sell the engine, trans, etc.

I agree, it's not the best deal, but if a private company can do it, what's taking Detroit so long?

I think there's two main reasons Ford, GM, and Chrysler don't have them -

Regularly scheduled maint - this is gone - big $$$ generator for dealers.

Take out the IC engine, transmission, and pollution standards and more companies will be able to build cars. Engine plants cost billions when you include R&D required to stay competitive.

4. Seems like a boatload of money, the plug-in conversions for Prius
run about 12 to 15K from what I've heard.

5. But the Prius can't go freeway speeds on electric
The motor isn't big enough to go more than about 40mph or so...

A full electric car has a much bigger motor to go freeways speeds, plus it has a larger battery system than a plug-in Prius.

I like the idea, but the thought of ripping out a brand new motor seems wasteful and expensive. It would be cool if GM could sell the cars without motors or fuel systems.

6. Good point, I was thinking this was a plug in converson for one of
the Saturn hybrids. Even at that, $25K seems expensive.

7. Good point
Here's one that's approved by Toyota for $10k plus shipping.

CEO of GM says they will be selling an electric car for under $30k by 2010.
