Boulder Housing Partners begins huge solar project

Contributed by: Boulder Housing Partners on 1/17/2008

Boulder Housing Partners (BHP), the housing authority serving the city of Boulder, has partnered with VisionSun Design, a design and project management consulting firm, to award a contract to solar energy company Bella Energy to install thirty 1.75 kilowatt solar electric systems on a 30-unit affordable housing site.

The 52.5 kW solar electric system will be installed at Diagonal Court Townhouses at 3265 30th Street in Boulder. Diagonal Court contains five separate buildings with six units each, for a total of 30 units. Each unit is individually metered by the local utility, Xcel Energy. This groundbreaking system will save Boulder's largest provider of affordable housing over $7800 per a year on its electricity bills at current rates. Every dollar saved for Boulder Housing Partners, a non-profit that provides housing assistance to more than 1,600 families in the city of Boulder, is recycled into more and better housing for its residents.

"I have been very impressed by the innovative and effective partnership that came together to create these energy savings at Diagonal Court," said Tim Beal, BHP's Director of Housing. "It is a model for the future of energy conservation and affordable housing. Much credit goes to Bella Energy and VisionSun Design for their commitment."

VisionSun Design LLC designed the entire project including project feasibility and system requirements, and then managed the vendor selection and installation project management process.
