Nuclear energy to be key in low-carbon energy policy: Brussels

BRUSSELS (AFP) — Nuclear power will remain a key element
as the world seeks to move toward low carbon energy, the
European Commission said Friday, announcing a new forum
for nuclear energy research.

The Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform will bring
together industry and researchers to draw up a strategy "to
prepare for the future and maintain European leadership in
this sector," the EU's executive arm said in a statement.

"Energy consumption worldwide is likely to double between
2000 and 2050, and nuclear energy will remain a key element
in future low-carbon energy systems," it added.

European Science and Research Commissioner Janez Potocnik
said that "for those countries that choose it," nuclear power
will be "a very important part of their solution to security
of supply and reduction of greenhouse gases".

1. they use too much water...
w/out even mentioning the problem of waste, the danger of po'ed citizens seizing control of one, or the homer simpsons who always end up sleeping at them very same controls.
They must think the planet's doomed anyway, otherwise fission technology would not even get mentioned regards power generation. Fact is, they cost 10 times best estimates, they cost a fortune to maintain, and pander to a junkie. The Euro Comm. should be busted, tried and jailed for pushing to addicts...conspiring to

3. For "some" of the countries that choose to develop nuclear power...
...it will contribute significantly to a reduction in their use of fossil fuels. This will happen in those countries the USA disapproves of and bombs back into the stone age. Demand destruction in its most fundamental form.

4. This is a propaganda piece masquerading as news...
I love the way they us "sustainable" in their name, when in fact nuclear power is no more sustainable than oil. What a snow job.

...
"She stressed that two major political and public concerns must be addressed to make this possible.

The first is ensuring that nuclear power is economically competitive.

The second "more importantly" is to make nuclear power "as neutral as possible in environmental terms and in terms of the legacy we leave future generations," she said, a reference to nuclear waste."
...

Fact is, they have yet to address either of those issues or the environmental destruction caused by uranium mining.

There is NOT ONE antinuke who gives a rat's ass about energy mining.

Not one.

Zero.

If there was such an anti-nuke, they would write about coal mining. But in fact, they couldn't care less about coal mining. By being anti-nukes they encourage coal mining.
