How did you celebrate Peace Day this year? If you're like most Americans, you probably had no idea that Sept. 21 has been set aside by the United Nations as an international holiday calling for peace and nonviolence around the world.

If you're a member of Peace Works!, you gathered with others at Duck Pond Park in Temecula to mark the occasion with a solemn candlelight vigil.

And if you're a self-proclaimed "protest warrior," you showed up at the park to harass and intimidate the peace activists.

Holding aloft their large signs, the conservative activists surrounded the group of retired ministers and librarians, Buddhists, Christians and atheists, young people and senior citizens who had come to express hope for peace.

What people would protest against peace? According to their signs, they were "Protest Warriors" ---- a loosely affiliated organization of conservative extremists who normally go to anti-war protests to provoke fights with slogan-shouting lefties. One Protest Warrior from Pennsylvania was recently identified in media reports as kicking a fallen AIDS protester at the Republican National Convention.

According to my research, it's our OWN party, the Dems, who are looking into reinstating the draft. Not the right-wingers. This statement by Kerry is very confusing to me.

4. it's a tactic

to head an unfair draft proposal off at the pass. If Rangel introduces a "fair" draft that includes the kids of the elites it takes wind out of any unfair draft the republicans might introduce. Democrats know it's coming with 4 more years of bush so they get a dialog going to include everyone in a draft cutting the repubs off at the knees.

But in response to your accusation: I beg to differ with you, but George Bush has already instituted a draft. Tours of duty are forcibly extended in order to staff his war in Iraq. National Guard members, and Army Reservists are being called BACK to active duty, in order to fight the same war. The Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) has been recalled to active duty for the first time in our nation's history. Bush brought back the draft, and we Democrats didn't support him.

I beg to differ with you, but George Bush 1 had recalled inactive reservists during desert storm for the first time in history. One thing that I don't favor is the idea that the soldiers were somehow joining the military and then suprised at the fact that they are fighting a war. Who would have thought that the profession of Arms would mean that you would go fight a war? I know way back when I joined up I wanted college money and a one way ticket out of Mom's house, but I was never so naive as to think that there was a zero percent chance that I would have to fight in a war. The reservists and national guard have drawn plenty of sympathy for having to be activated, but all these "one weekend a month my ass" knew or should have known that the reserve component was intented to be used to strengthen up deployments after the draft had ended. So, for the reservists who are so suprised that they got activated after 12 or so years of weekend fat camp, I say that maybe next time they volunteer for something they should really think it through.

With usernames like "Death2Islam" and personal photos of users posing with their guns, thats gotta be a joke. Is it? Is that just satire? Have I been fooling myself about the "marketplace of ideas"?

Why is objection to national policy so offensive to so many? I feel so naive. I though that is what started this country.
