Yellow Journalism

Thinking through historical parallels to the coverage on the war in Iraq, I come back to the Spanish American war that ended the 19th Century.

In that war, too, journalists sold newspapers by whipping the public into a frenzy based on uncricital acceptance of government propaganda. In the history books, this period was known as an age of Yellow Journalism.

Are there any historians out there who care to take a stab at illustrating the links between the performance of the media and government at that time and ours?
