So I am meeting Dean tomorrow
Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 09:51 PM by Egnever
I am going to a The cocktail fundraiser he is having tommorrow. I am semi involved here in vegas in campaigning for him and I am told by the people organizing it that chances are pretty good I will get to ask him a question.

So heres your chance to resolve an issue about Dean here at DU what should I ask him?

Let me say I am solidly in Deans camp he connects with me more than any other candidate on that stage except perhaps sharpton last night. So dont expect me to use my question on something like do you eat babies for breakfast. However I will ask him a tough question. I am not a one issue voter and there are places I dont agree with him 100% so even if i dont agree with his answer i will try to get an honest question answered honestly.

So what should I ask him?

Things that I have toyed with include
I/P
plans after tax repeal
Countering the waffle attacks

I would love to put one thing to bed here if possible though. What should that one thing be?

1. Ok
Job loss is a big issue. Ask him what he will do about NAFTA, and how he will get it done. We need to stop the job loss now. Good luck

4. As I understand it now
he is for NAFTA but wants to renegotiate it to put in labor and human rights standards.

Not sure I understand what more to look for in that?

18. as far as labor standards are concerned:
Ask him about a NAFTA minimum wage and overall environmental standards. The way I see it, a minimum wage that equals a living wage is sorely needed if we are stem the tide of jobs flooding out of the US. And for environmental standards - why should we in the US import Mexican produce that was treated with chemicals that are illegal to use in this country?

"Dean supported NAFTA but has changed his position since launching his White House bid, saying he would favor the deal only with strict environmental and labor protections."

16. Yes! That would be Great if that could be cleared up.
I always thought Dean's stance on the Iraqi Invasion was very clear until someone starts bringing up that(biden-lugar bill) and then it gets explained by a Dean supporter and I'm clear again. But I think it would be good if we could hear straight from Dean what it is he's thinking. :)

It would be great have a first hand account of what exactly he sees as the defining differences between them that makes his position so different from kerry's.

Personally I think they are night and day but it would be nice to get it from the horses mouth.

There is nothing in it which would likely have changed the outcome.

29. And here's a quote that says how Dean is thinking
"My view of this is since Iraq is not an imminent danger to the United States, the United States should not unilaterally attack Iraq. Iraq does not have nuclear weapons. They do not have much of a nuclear program, if they have one at all left. And they have not... there is not any particular evidence that is convincing that they have given weapons of mass destruction to terrorists. All those three things would constitute, in my view, a reason to defend our country by unilaterally attacking. But those are not the cases. Sec. Powell and the president have not made those cases well." Howard Dean February 25,2003

Hey there :)

No offense intended.

I will use it as a secondary question on the asumption you will get your chance. I am not sure of what kind of time we will have. I just got a call asking if i could pick up one of the staffers at the airport my impression is that it will be pretty casual, maybe I will get to ask two.

11. I am meeting him Wednesday. If I get the chance,
I plan to mention his line in his stump about how this time the person who gets the most votes will become president, and ask if he has any specific ideas how to make that happen. I know that in the beginning he was skeptical of the idea of BBV. He hasn't commented in a while that I know of, and I really wonder if he will be taking any positive steps to insure that the election isn't stolen from him.

27. That's an excellent way to bring up the electronic voting
machines. Please ask him that question!

Tomorrow, if given the chance, I will be asking him, so that I can hear it straight from his own lips, if he will repeal NCLB or just try to 'fix' it. I know he has already said that he will repeal it, but I've only heard him say it once and I want to know in my heart that he will do what he can to get rid of that harmful law. That's when I'll start pounding the pavement daily to further his campaign.

19. I agree with Bearfan454,
what can be done to curb electronic voting fraud.

But if you need a second question then consider asking him:

Are you willing to humble yourself to unite the Democratic Party?

I am looking for a leader who will begin to unite Democrats. CSPAN rebroadcast the last debate today and ALL the candidates (excluding Lieberman) looked very presidential and worthy of praise!
I am sure Gov. Dean can find some common ground with his “opponents” and be the first to say (while motioning towards them) “I won’t have far to look for a cabinet!”

Democrats might ought to try that unity thing!

Enjoy your visit and thanks for sharing!

28. Definitely Ask him Why Closing factories here and opening them in China is
Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 10:50 PM by Dems Will Win
EXPENSABLE!

Here is the question/statement:

"Most of the lost 3.5 million jobs have gone overseas, yet the expenses of closing a factory in the U.S. and opening one in China can still be deducted from a business's income tax. So in essence, the individual taxpayer is actually subsidizing the exporting of American high-tech, service and manufacturing jobs to China and India. This is the most important economic issue yet there is no serious movement to remove this as an expensable item. Corporations should pay an additional fee if they export a job overseas, not get paid back for doing it! Then they would stop closing many factories here. This has nothing to do with trade agreements, I just want on answer on banning overseas out-sourcing expensing because that's what's really making people lose their jobs and no politician has put forth a plan yet. You are our only hope, Governor. If you were President, would you go to the nation and start a grass-roots Internet movement to get the COngress to remove Expensable Overseas Out-sourcing?"

Whichever Dem candidate pushes this issue first wins an extra 8-10 points in the primaries and the general election, I say. I hope it's Dean.

38. How 'bout a new higher rate for income over 1 mil, 5 mil 25 mil?
Or maybe an AIM that actually works with corporations?

Dean could do everything he wanted without having to raise taxes on the middle class if he added new higher marginal rates for corporations (and individuals).

Also, why not tax unearned income (dividends and capital gains) at at least the same (but preferably higher) rates as earned income?

33. Ask him why he doesn't buy shirts with bigger neck sizes
All he needs to do is step up 1/2" on the size, and it won't look like his head is ready to pop off.

And ask him why he changed his mind on the $87b going to Iraq. This debate, he said he opposed it. Last debate, he was in favor of it. Would somebody (Trippi, maybe) make up his mind?

if he has anyone seriously on top of the voting machine "controversy"- BBV. Does he have a researcher briefing him or if he'd like some prepared info sent to him. Is he supporting the current House Res and does he realize that there is no provision in it for mandatory spot checking for accuracy.
