I've already weighed in on these issues on previous threads. For the record:
I belive we should treat drugs and the addicted as the Dutch do. Filling up prisons with addicts helps no one.
I use to have a prostitute as a college roommate. That's a long story, but needless to say-I tried to help her find other, less unhealthy, employment. I never thought she belonged in prison-if I did, I wouldn't have been living with her!
OF COURSE we need a National Health care system! Jeezus, how on earth did you decide that I, or any DUer would be against such an idea? It would also be good if the legal system would have helped some of these women with their abusive boyfriends/ husbands before the situation turned tragic, but they didn't.Since you don't know each of their stories, please don't make so many presumptions about them.
My father doesn't make the laws, and he thinks A LOT of the women there don't belong there (but the murderers usually do). He's not a judge or a cop, he didn't send them there, but he does TRY TO HELP THEM while they are there. So inmates don't deserve the assistance of a mental health care professional? Oh wait, you never said that, did you? But now you know how it feels to have someone else put absurd words in your mouth.
My dad hears horrible, infuriating, sad and depressing stories every day. This story, however, gave him a much needed laugh. The inmate laughed at his reaction to it too, saying to some effect that of course there are some things worse that being a crack whore, like being a republican. My dad just nodded and kept laughing.
