Madonna at the Superbowl? Seriously?
Edited on Sun Dec-04-11 10:10 PM by bluesbassman
I didn't realize she still performed.

Well, on the upside it's not Lady Gaga.

Edit to add that it was just announced that Madonna will perform at halftime at this year's Superbowl.

What are they thinking?

47. I am an old coot but was pleasantly surprised by Gaga
when I stumbled across a preview of her new single while channel surfing last week. It was an intelligently done techno-dance track with a pretty memorable hook. Not bad at all. The video was a little bizarre and incomprehensible but I am about 30 years past her target demographic, then, aren't I?

6. Let me take this opportunity to register how much I've always hated Madonna
Not that I necessarily hate her as much as I hate how she's been received and vetted as some cultural icon. Madonna is IMO, without a doubt, the single most overrated musical artist of the last 30 years.

That being said, it seems that the halftime planners have finally gotten over 2004's 'nipplegate.' For a while there they were deliberately choosing family-friendly acts. Of course now that she's in her 50s, I guess Madonna is now more likely to be family-friendly than to wear cones on her breasts.

Edited on Mon Dec-05-11 06:33 PM by WolverineDG
Somehow I don't think Mick & Keith would agree with you.....

on edit: I hate Madonna too....fucking pretentious ----- with her fake British accent who couldn't sing on key if her life depended on it (see her Oscar performances, where the producers refused to cover up her bad singing).

9. Super Bowl Halftime shows are very inconsistent
Since 2000, these are the shows they've had:

2000 - Phil Collins, Christina Aguilera - zzzzz
2001 - Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and that wonderful version of "Walk This Way" performed by Aerosmith and Britney Spears - WTF?
2002 - U2 - probably the best SBHS ever
2003 - Shania Twain, Sting, No Doubt - zzzz
2004 - Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake - Two words: "Wardrobe Malfunction"
2005 - Paul McCartney - Does anyone under 50 care?
2006 - Rolling Stones - Decent, but small percentage of people care
2007 - Prince - top 5 SBHS
2008 - Tom Petty - Not bad, but had he released anything since "Free Fallin'" in the early '90s?
2009 - Bruce Springsteen - Good show, but it's in the lower part of the top 10 at best
2010 - The Who - See Springsteen with a smaller set of people who care
2011 - Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Slash - did anyone actually watch all of this? Everyone I know changed the channel it was so bad

If I had to guess, I would predict Madonna will be a snooze-fest.

The problem is that after the shows of the early 2000s, the organizers don't want to take any chances. Last year's show was the first since 2004 with a semi-relevant headliner, and it sucked. At least they can expect a 53 year old Madonna to be pretty tame and uncontroversial (outside of those of us who would prefer an artist who is somewhat current). While I'm certainly not a fan, I would prefer Lady Gaga. At least that would be potentially entertaining - even if I did have to mute it.

38. I love U2 as well, but I have to disagree with you
I think Prince was the best SBHS in the history of the game. I also think it was one of the better live performances I've ever seen. He was ON FIRE, IMHO.

Last year's show was so bad we actually walked away from the TV.

The Who had the potential to make it the best halftime show ever - if Pete smashed his guitar one more time on live TV, I can't even imagine what the network would have done...

:woohoo:

51. U2's show was best not just because of the music
A large part of why U2's show was, IMO, the best show is because of what it represented coming on the heels of 9/11. From the display listing the names of those who died to Bono's American flag lining of his jacket, they helped with the healing from the suffering people had endured for the past several months. The music was great, there is no doubt, but what the show meant was at least as important.

You'll also note I said Prince's show was top 5. For me, it was probably #2 on the list. While I enjoy his music, I have never really considered myself a "fan". That show was incredible, though.

The Who's show was good, but really highlighted for me how much age has impaired Daltrey's voice. It was very good despite that, but I also understand that many people under 30 wouldn't care as much as those of us who grew up listening to them.
