A-10 warthogs
ya know, probably one of the coolest fighter planes ever made. I am entranced by those machines. Uglier than hell, but damn what a platform.

describe the plane like this:

It's sort of like the smart, ugly girl in high school... not your first choice, but you were really, really glad to have her around.

2. The grunts generally appreciate them.
Much better ground support than from the fast-movers.

Had a friend who flew them. Said they actually slow down when the 30mm cannon is firing.

10. Excellent example of jet-propulsion principle
I had a student who served in the first gulf war who was on an A-10 crew; wasn't clear to me if he flew one, or was ground support.

He said that they were told not to fire the cannon for more than 3 second bursts, as the airspeed would drop to stall level if you did.

I taught physics, and this student volunteered this as an example of conservation of momentum.

Definately a durable and effective aircraft. Plus they are quiet for an attack aircraft. When they are moving low and fast you do not hear them till they are on top of you or already gone past.

12. Yup!
Defiantely one of my favoriate "call for fire" days at OBC. Loved having them on call when I was in too. Knew I had something that would do the job, and wasn't going "bingo" on me for no good reason.

I wish the Air Force had followed through and transfered them to the Army inventory. AF dosen't appreciate them like we do. We'd give 'em a good home. Kind like a stray dog. Besides...they look more like Army equiment anyway. :)

28. too true
AF generals hate the things, don't want to have anything to do with ground combat. Assholes think they can win a war sheerly on air power. Never happen, never will. Look at the mess in Kosovo. If Big Dog hadn't been a political coward and had gone in on the ground with massive air support as per Gen Clark that mess would have been over in 2-3 weeks without all of the "colateral" damage & ethnic cleansing.

they want you to tell them in advance where the enemy is going to be. Oh, excuse me. let me call them right now and schedule a time that is convienant for you to fly. I used to get into growling matches with my Air Force laison about that crap.

that women are allowed to fly. Flying tank is what it is---it could lose a large chunk out of both wings and still fly.

I would imagine so, if they're allowed to fly them at all, unless they're learning to fly to train other pilots.

33. Hmpf... SU-25 Frogfoot is better.
Edited on Tue Apr-06-04 02:18 PM by JonathanChance

Faster, more maneuvearble, can carry more ordinace, can take quite a bit of punishment,(As pretty well much all Soviet/Russian-desighned aircraft are meant to) and it has a naval version, capable of carrier work, not to mention, unlike the A-10, it can hold its own in dogfight, when necessary.

Granted it has fewer electronics, and It can't take as much punishment as the A-10, and it's basically a rip-off of the Northrop YA-9, the aircraft that lost to the A-10,

An A-10 taking out a Frogfoot? Bullshit.
Frogfoots are much more agile. Those things can fly fucking rings around a Warthog.

Now, An F-15, F-16, F-18, or an F-14, It would be no fucking contest. They'd make that Frogfoot go down quicker than Bob Packwood's pants at a job fair.

42. That's my point
The A-10 is a MUCH better attack acft than the SU-25. You said that the Frogfoot could hold its own in a dogfight, and I pointed out that any US fighter would hose it with no problem.

BTW, the A-10 is not a fighter; neither (despite it's designation, is the F-117). So, when I said any US fighter I meant F-14/15/16/18.

Sorry for not being more clear!

Given the skill of the person behind the stick, of course.

We learned this lesson the hard way in 'Nam. We had MiG17s blowing our most advanced frontline aircraft out of the sky!
