5. I'm saving up for a very Merry Christmas.

The initial release of The Glenlivet XXV is a 1980 vintage selection which has been ‘finished’ in first-fill sherry butts for a period of nearly two years.

11. I can only afford the 10 year old stuff.
I would love to try that kind. I did buy a bottle of the 15 year old but missed the peat taste that I've grown accustomed too.

14. I wish I could afford the good stuff, but ...

Sometimes any old (or new) scotch will do.

15. Along with Laphroaig, this was my favorite
Scotch in the days when I could afford such things:

19. I am pretty new to scotch
so I need help. I could tell the difference between Laphroiag 10 yo and Laphroaig 15 yo and the 15yo was the best I have ever had. I also tried the cask strength and it landed in between the 10 and 15 for me. I should say I absolutely loved the 15 but made funny faces when sipping other 2 (lol)...(Although I am pretty sure if I had been able to power through a couple more they would have gotten better...but time and circumstance didn't permit me to explore further at that juncture.)

And I have recently had a glass of Glenfiddich 15yo and didn't find it nearly as good as the Laphroaig. However I know I need to expand my tastes and expectations so any guidance you guys can give would be appreciated.

Oh and the only other scotches I ever had came in plastic gallon jugs and I doubt they should be factored in to whatever I end up trying..lol

20. Laphroaig is a love-it-or-hate-it tipple
Edited on Fri Aug-05-11 11:40 AM by hifiguy
It is so smoky and peaty that there's nothing else quite like it. I once saw it referred to as "the sort of whisky that tastes you back" and that's pretty accurate. I loved the stuff when I could afford it. :9 Some people claim it tastes like iodine smells, but they are poltroons whose opinions are not worthy of consideration. :)

Balvenie and Lagavulin are very nice, as is Glenlivet, though the less expensive Glenlivets are a bit lighter in body than something like Laphroaig. Glenfiddich always seemed a bit astringent to me. But that's the great thing about single-malt Scotches: every one has it's own highly distinctive character.

Sheep Dip blended Scotch (yes, it's really called Sheep Dip) is pretty darn good too, IIRC.

22. I've never tried Laphroaig.
But that sounds like my kind of whisky. I like The Glenlivet and The Dalmore, mainly because that's what I can afford.
