What is your favourite summer food? I like cucumber sandwiches.
You slice the cucumber very thin, and place it under layers of paper towel and layer this again and again in a bowl. Put something heavy like a huge can of apple juice on top. Let sit overnight. This squeezes out any excess water. Then you put the cukes on white bread. Put mayonnaise on the bread & salt and pepper on the cucumbers and cover with second slice of bread. Now comes the most important part. You slice the crusts off the bread with a sharp knife. Slice into two triangles. Et voila! Cucumber sandwiches like the British have.

8. Wild asparagus and huckleberries
Edited on Mon Aug-01-11 10:24 PM by pokerfan
Asparagus (spare-grass) I gather from the river.

And the huckleberries I pick in the mountains. Huckleberries have resisted domestication for centuries: "You can take the huckleberry out of the mountains, but you can't take the mountains out of the huckleberry." A huckleberry is like a blueberry on steroids: tarter, sweeter, juicier, more intense in every way.

25. Headed to Traverse City for vacation in a week and a half.
Escaping DC and the heat: A whole week there on a lake, with a stop on the way up for chicken dinner in Frankenmuth.

A glass of area riesling and sunset over Lake Michigan or West Bay. Heaven.

I wish I could share them with you. They are the only veggie that is really doing well in my garden. I will try your British cucumber sandwiches. (I don't know how to make pickles.) Thanks!

My favorite summer food is watermelon. :)
