Sorry about last week but I was in training and really didn't have time to write my weekly True Blood wrap up, but after last night's episode all I can say is :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow:
I think this is one of the best episodes ever of True Blood - hats off to Alan Ball and his entire team of writers and director for giving the fans what they really wanted. What was great was there was plenty of good stuff, minimum of the bad stuff, improvement on those things that weren't that great and without a doubt NO FRICKING HOTSHOT INBREDS (in fact that's 2 weeks in a row without them).
Let's start out with what was HOT HOT HOT and that of course was Eric & Sookie! No we didn't get the hot shower scene that we all read multiple times in the book "Dead to the World" (the 4th book which this season is very loosely based on) but instead we got WAAAAAAAY better - much WAAAAAAAY better. See, for those of you who have read the book, Bill was pretty much a non-factor in the 4th book - he was away in Peru building some vampire database. But Alan Ball has always been very adamant that the book was only a guideline for what we saw in the TV series and that adaptations would be made that would allow for the TV show to be awesome. Would Eric and Sookie finally hooking up be even half as juicy if it wasn't for the fact that Bill was the one that finally had to let this happen. When Bill finally discovered that Sookie had lied to him and indeed she was hiding Eric in her house - the confrontation was amazing - especially since Eric & Sookie were about 2 seconds away from doing the deed. We really saw just how morally corrupt Bill had turned when he was willing to judge Sookie based on one lie even though he spend months lying to her - Bill & Sookies entire relationship was based on the lies that Bill told her and truths he withheld for her. But Sookie is the prize that so many vampires would love to sink their teeth into and Bill figured the only way he could win Sookie back was to eliminate the only one competition that he had with her -- and that was Eric. Pam was the only other vampire to know what Sookie was but she didn't have the blood connection that both Eric and Bill shared with Sookie.
Of course Bill would find any excuse to give Eric the True Death and I'm sure that Pam would not have been too far behind. Bill knew that was the only way he could ever hope to win Sookie back (and his somewhat unlimited tap into Vamp Crack Fairy blood). It was poignant to see Eric submit to Bill when Sookie told him that Bill was his king (since Eric's mind had been wiped away he had no clue who Bill was). But I suspect I was not the only one in tears when Eric was moments away from meeting his True Death and he told Bill that "I was born the day that I met Sookie". Ultimately I think if he killed Eric he would never have Sookie again - Sookie has a mind of her own. If Bill was to win back Sookie he would have to compete with Eric and not kill him. I also suspect that when Eric's mind is finally restored that Sookie will remember what a smug ass that Eric could be. Perhaps Bill is hoping this is a short lived romance.
Ultimately though, it was when Eric found Sookie wandering the swamp woods of Bon Temp with the distant howls of all the shifting going on that night (it was a full moon - all shifters of all types automatically shift). The amazing song they played while Eric & Sookie consumated their love there in the swamps with the skeeters biting and the brooks bubbling and the full moon shining down on their full moon. But that scene would not have been complete without a cutaway to Bill, with a snifter of blood in his hand, as he reflected that he has lost Sookie to his biggest enemy. And Kudos for the music using Neko Case's "I Wish I Was the Moon". I suspect that there has been a massive rush to download the song/album from all the Eric/Sookie fans!
THE WITCHES: Finally we're seeing the Marnie we expected from the books. Instead of this bumbling simpleton that she started out to be in the beginning of the season, Fiona Shaw has turned into a real powerhouse on the show now that she is possessed by Alexandra (that witch from 400 years ago). I can see that we're leading up to a major battle towards the end of the season. Will Marnie/Alexandra finally have their revenge on the Vampires and force them to walk in the Sun? I'm a bit nervous because previews showed Jessica opening the doors to sunlight and I'd hate to see her bite the dust.
I think Jesus and Lafayette also showed major improvements. First because they didn't have Tara hanging around with her snide comments but also because they really dove into what their true nature is. I loved the scene with Jesus, his grandfather, Lafayette and the rattle snake. I think that Jesus and Lafayette (who channeled the spirit of Tio Luca - that was a great scene). BTW, I wasn't here last week but I love the fact that even though Lafayette managed to piss off the vampires he still managed to find the time to give himself a Kris-Kross hairdo. Jump Jump Jump around anyone?
SHAPESHIFTERS: Although I was kinda hoping the Mickens would stick around a bit longer, it dawned on me the moment Melinda Mickens was murdered by her son Tommy that this was going to blast this storyline wide-open. Sure enough, the highlights they showed before this week's episode started showed Hot Teacher Luna talking about how she could shift into another human being because she was a skin-walker, someone she achieved by basically 'killing' her mom when she was born. When Tommy finally allowed all his rage to vent on Joe Lee, I really was hoping that Melinda would be spared because it was the one thing that made Tommy the happiest. I thought Tommy, who shifted into Sam, was hilarious - he fired Sookie on the spot and jumped at the chance to sleep with Sam's hot girlfriend (although she suspected something was different). Tommy is living proof that children need interaction with other children in order to grow up with a sense of normalcy. Tommy's childhood was so out-of-whack he doesn't know how to do anything but to bully people and whine about how miserable is life is.
JASON & THE WERE-PANTHERS: Most improved storyline! Let's face it, Alan Ball heard our prayers and it was wonderful to not see a single hotshot inbreed were-panther. I'm sure they'll pop back in again but it was good not see any of them. I thought the Jason storyline has gone from the absolutely worst to one of the best. You have to know that having Jason drink vast quantities of Jessica's healing vamp blood is only going to make for the juiciest of love triangles between Jason, Jessica and Jessica's boyfriend (and Jason's best friend) Hoyt. I thought it was so very touching this week when Jessica, sensing Jason in distressed thanks to that vamp connection, rushed to help protect him even though from what we don't know. We suspect that Jason is suppose to be were-panther but as Sookie found out from Alcide and Debbie - weres are born not made. But hell, who knows what could happen and technically the books had Jason going were-panther. I guess just not tonight.
MOST DISAPPOINTING STORYLINE - The WEREWOLVES I suspect that eventually the happy couple that Alcide and Debbie will eventually fall to the wayside. I loved how Alcide brought up that "Righteous Honestly" comment when he found Debbie consorting with the Shreveport packmaster (someone who was a real asshole to Alcide last week when Alcide said he was exploring 'Free Agency'). I think the problem is there are too many storylines on the plate which has bumped this group of supes to the backburner. But please can we have more shirtless Alcide??!!!
FINALLY THE HUMANS - really, is this the best we can do? Tara has got to be the most annoying character on the plate. I know she's gone thru a ton of suffering but I think she's being totally misused. First she was like the odd person out with the witches. And although I'm happy she has found love with that girl from New Orleans, half of me almost wishes they would walk off into the sunset. The only bright side to all things Tara was when Pam (beautifully done by Kristen Bauer - I love how they went after the one thing that Pam loves the most and that's her looks. She's so funny with the rotting face) went after them at the end of the episode. I don't think Tara will be killed any time soon but I think she'll be used as bait to ensure that Lafayette and Jesus help them to restore Eric's memory and Pam's beauty.
I thought the awkward way that Andy got a date with Holly was a bit funny. BTW, I saw an interview with Chris Bauers (Andy Bellefleur) and was surprised at how differently he speaks in RL. He is definitely nothig like Andy in real life - very soft spoken.
ABSOLUTELY WORST STORYLINE OF THE SEASON Terry and Arlene - really, do we care about the possessed baby? Were you like me and rooting for the damn baby to be in the house when it explodes? I know Alan has a way of resurrecting bad storylines (ie - the werepanthers) but I'm thinking this one is beyond hope.
That's my wrap-up. Would love to hear your feedback!
