Where are the fireflies? There are NONE outside right now --
and in rural Virginia, in July, it should be lit up out there right now with fireflies.

Where the hell did they go? Some hideous pesticide? I love them, I miss them.

4. Did you have a rough winter?
Apparently, along with pesticides, environmental factors greatly affect firefly numbers.

Here's a link to Boston's Museum of Science citizen science project Firefly Watch.

8. well, there were some really heavy snows
I had read about the Firefly Watch; our local power co-op wrote a story about it in their monthly magazine. Just makes me sad.

5. Up here 10 miles from Lake Ontario I couldn't believe how many I saw.
We've lived her since 1985, and in the early years I never saw lightning bugs. We're past the peak, but a week or so back they were fantastic.

6. Ya know, I was wondering that last night
Drove home from the Des Moines airport to Ames Iowa, about 30 miles north. In the past, you could look at the fields (cause there's precious little else along I35 to look at) and see clouds of fireflies - it was cool, really. Last night, none.

Even back in Maryland, last year, I didn't see many. I hope they aren't a gone species, a relic of the past. What is summertime without fireflies?

7. We still have them here in W PA, at least around my house.
But by the end of July, they are fading. Peak is usually around the 4th of July (this peak is my fireworks display).

And yes, pesticide use has made them disappear in areas where there is a lot of use. We have lots of yards and fields here where there is never pesticide used.

Growing up. But in the last few years, we get them every summer. Not a ton of them. but 3 or 4 every evening right after sunset. Very cool!
