I don't like the way the "back" button works on firefox 4
half the time it gives a dropdown menu and that annoys me because I can't figure out what I'm doing to make it do that and it takes two more clicks to just go back one page.

Can I turn it off or adjust it in someway? Or is there a way to not get the menu?

1. You get the dropdown menu when you click and hold the button.

If you just click and let go immediately, you shouldn't be seeing it.

I don't know if there is a mouse adjustment you can use so it doesn't register as "holding" for you so quickly. You might want to play with mouse click settings...

You might just have to train yourself to let go immediately after clicking.

6. yeah, it doesn't happen every time
but when it does it kid of throws off my rhythm, you know? certainly not as annoying as the slow connection speed I live with, but it is a small irritation - thanks for looking up the fixes!

It looks like there is a definite fix using userChrome.css.

I am not sure about the addon fix they mention, although it would certainly be easier if it works. It looks to me like the addon RESTORES the (Firefox 3-style) extra button with the dropdown menu next to the back button, for people who want a separate button. I'm not sure if it actually REMOVES the dropdown functionality from the Firefox 4 back button.

4. You only get so many clicks in a lifetime.
People who fail to fix this problem will die sooner.

7. The back button has had that feature for a long time, however
I abhor that obnoxious round back/forward button hybrid icon that comes with the default theme and the fact that I change my theme to my liking, may be why I've never encountered the problem you're describing.

Right now I've got an alternate set of FF buttons/icons installed called https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/stratini-padded/">Stratini Padded. There's a tiny little "down" arrow nestled between the "back" and "forward" icons so I know exactly which operation I'm performing when I click my clicky over the thingy.
