Baby Boomer DUers: What are we supposed to do?
I know this was the subject of a recent DU post I made

But honestly, well, at least speaking for me, I am confused

You guys showed us the road out...or at least the road that we could use

And now, since you guys have had more experience than us, what are we supposed to do?

I ask you this as a student, not as a leader

I am no leader

I am not worth following

But my principles are, because they are your principles and the principles of many...

3. Good friend, we live in a country populated by a frightening number of dumbfucks.
If you ever doubt that, turn on a television during the evening news hours. You aren't going to find anything along the lines of Walter Cronkite. The first thing we can do is attempt to educate those who will listen and have the wisdom to decline discussion with those who are too fucking stupid to understand that Palin is a moron. They are the ones who still think the shrub was a great president.

But the most important thing any of us can do is to educate our children, not just in academics and sociology, but in our own values and beliefs, and with a clear message that what we are attempting to impart on them is our perspective, not what we demand of them. They are individuals and must come to their own conclusions about what they honestly believe. We can only serve as guides, nothing more.

The sands of time were eroded by the river of constant change.

6. "Educating our Children" - yes!
Like CSNY told us - Agreed!

We GenXers may seem bitter at times, but we're with you. A whole lot more than we're with our parents (My dad was a post-Korean war, pre-Vietnam draftee.

Back then, going to college could defer your draft status.

He served in between his Junior and Senior years in college.

Became a cop. During the 60s. Your ears would run away from your head if you could hear his stories.

But - I knew who the 'correct' were as in what actually happened, is correct.

It's been one helluva ride, in the wake of you guys. Ask me why so many GenXers participate in that new-surf movement called "Wakeboarding."

America is more than just a country - its a thought process.

We have to keep it that way. Make the idiots think. Anything else would be treason.

7. Mine all know what Paul Revere REALLY did.
Edited on Wed Jun-08-11 06:01 PM by HopeHoops

Actually, a lot of my wife's KINDERGARTEN students know that.

On edit: My own kids know the real story. The kindergarten students know the "The British Are Coming" story. The Palimoron only got one detail right - he was on a horse.

Palin Fans Edit Paul Revere Wikipedia Page, Define ‘Revisionist History’

Sarah Palin fans are engaging in revisionist history—literally, this time.

http://www.deathandtaxesmag.com/99635/palin-fans-edit-paul-revere-wikipedia-page-define-revisionist-history/

Many kids go online to get footnotes for their reports at school. Or the basic information itself.

Between the Texas textbook changes, the privatization of schools to reflect corporatist thinking, and the rewriting the Bible to leave out those pesky bleeding hearts, what will they know?

What will the next generation think the world is about, other than this model the GOPigs are presenting us?

This is of course the result of the group that read Orwell and decided it was a good way to run the world, not something to be dreaded and avoided!

We're being led into something so stupid it's hardly human.

12. It is very Orwell, but mine learned it from books. The Texas thing is disgusting - very Orwell.
As for the Wikipedia thing, they backed out the bullshit and locked it down. Colbert scored by getting someone to modify the page for "bells" to include a Paul Revere reference. Wikipedia is a good starting point, but many schools, including our district, do NOT allow it as a reference in papers.

But shit - not knowing even the basics of the story? She really is a fucking moron. The common story isn't exactly correct, but it is far more accurate than the crap she threw out and then defended. I heard that "Eddie Munster" Hannity tried to back up her version as well.

13. She and her gang insult everyone's work and intellectual ethics. What are the kids to think,
Maybe don't keep them away from the media totally (impossible) when they see these grifters doing so well raking in bigger money than they can hope to achieve with a year's hard work, seeing them being adored, with having so much influence?

I mean you can't even get away from Palin in the supermarket. Go to buy a greeting card, and there she is, and not as a joke. Go to the magazine rack and the Tea Party has a big glossy magazine extolling their Kochroach line, like it's glamorous and normal. All nice and slick and psychotic.

These are the scum whose mentality killed JFK, RFK, MLK, you name it. They stole their lives to break out hearts and leave us without a voice. I stumbled on a video of RFK announcing MLK's death today. My reaction was the same as it is whenever I hear MLK's voice. Just heartache and tears, the pain never goes away.

It's been relentless in this country, for so very long. I agreed with Aldous Huxley on a lot of things, but nothing more than this quote:

“Maybe this world is another planet's Hell.”

Sorry, but it's just one of those days.

5. Well, there's this.

You who are on the road
must have a code that you can live by
and so become yourself
because the past is just a goodbye
Teach your children well
their father's hell
will slowly go by
and feed them on your dreams
the one they picks
the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why
if they told you, you would cry
so just look at them and sigh
and know they love you.
And you, of tender years
can't know the fears
that your elders grew by
and so please help them with your youth
they seek the truth
before they can die.
(Can you hear and do you care
and can't you see we must be free
to teach our children what you believe in
make a world that we can believe in)
Teach your parents well
their children's hell
will slowly go by
and feed them on your dreams
the one they picks
the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why
if they told you, you would cry
so just look at them and sigh
and know they love you.

9. They reflect what we have in our hearts, not what we say. Better stay in love with everyone.

10. Learn how the political structure works. Learn about a few issues that concern you.
Get together with some people who agree with you about the issues, preferably including some who have experience fighting and sometimes win. Formulate an action plan. Set up an educational event. Put up some fliers. Hand out some leaflets. Talk about the issue with some people you didn't already know. Write some LTTE. Start a phone tree. start a mailing list. Keep in touch on the phone. Track legislation. Set up a delegation to talk to your congressman when he's in town. Start a newsletter. Show up at public hearings. Call your city council. Write an op-ed for the local paper. Buy a filing cabinet and keep records of what you learn. Knock on neighbors' doors. If what you're doing today doesn't work, try something different tomorrow. Don't give up
