Has anyone ever done a job interview on Skype?
I've been interviewing for a new position and I'm really jazzed about it. I'm about halfway through the interview steps and so far, I'm impressed. I consider interviews two ways- I have to like them, too. I have a job so if I'm going to jump ship, it had better be good, know what I mean?

So, I assume the obvious:
1) dress like I'm actually meeting someone in person
2) have a neutral background behind me
3) have complete silence (I'm sticking the cat in the bedroom)
4) conduct myself as if in person

Is there anything I'm missing? Anything else completely obvious that I'm gonna go d'oh! when you suggest it? My Skyping experience is with my parents and Mr. kt when he's on a business trip. I haven't done a professional Skype before.

Any suggestions?

1. I like #3
I could just see being in the middle of an interview and having my cat come and press his butt up against the webcam. Sounds like you have it covered, also take the phone off the hook.

6. Pitter-pat would walk right up to the camera and stick his nose on it.
He does that all the time with cameras. He's a natural little model.

And yes! Take the phones off their hooks. I had that in my head, too. Thanks for the reminder. :hi:

2. All I can think is check the lighting
You don't want a weird shadow or something.

7. That is a smart idea.
I'll have to play with that at the time of day the interview is scheduled. It isn't until next Thursday, so I'll have time to work on that. Thanks! :hi:

3. wear a very low cut top
and keep leaning forward.

just kidding, of course.

I agree with all four of your steps. I might also do a practice interview with your husband over Skype - while you may try to conduct yourself like it's an in-person interview, there are subtle differences between being online via skype and being in person. Even with a fast internet connection on both ends, there is sometimes a delay and that can be distracting when you're in the middle of an interview.

8. Mr. kt had the same suggestion...
:spank:

I think a practice run is a great idea. I will certainly do that. The delay may be distracting. It isn't a big deal with friends and family, but in an interview situation, it may prove to be distracting, especially if I haven't worked on dealing with it previously.

Thanks! :hi:

4. I'd also read through my resume a couple times
before the interview. So if they ask you any questions about your career, you can answer them. I keep mine on hand for phone interviews so I can reference it. But in a Skype interview, that might not be such a good idea, unless you can place it where they can't see it. And you can read it without being too obvious.

9. Good idea. Maybe have some bullet points ready.
This is the fourth step of a six step interview process. I've had the informal interview and the formal interview with the HR assistant. I've had the introductory interview with the head of HR. This is the formal interview with the head of HR. Next, if I continue, it will be a Skype with the Regional Manager, then finally off to Kansas City to meet with corporate for the final blessing.

I need to really think about where this interview will head and be prepared with responses, talking points and conversational methods.

Thanks! :hi:

5. Doesn't Skype show a small inset window with the video you're sending the other person?
I'd want to turn that off once I was sure I was framed properly. Too distracting.

10. That's a great idea. I hadn't thought of that. That little inset video might make me nervous!
Smart. I like it. Thanks! :hi:
