Nineties Nostalgia: "The Buzz"
Edited on Thu Apr-01-04 12:54 AM by Fenris
I just saw this commercial for a 2 disc set of songs highlighting the grunge/post grunge sewer of the nineties. Now, I lived through said period of music, and I don't remember liking many of these songs. Let's take a waltz down memory lane, shall we?

http://www.musicspace.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=musicspace&category%5Fname=00s&product%5Fid=MS1134&disc=1#tracks

01 What I Got | Sublime - Now, I lived in California when this song was really popular. A lot of my friends were pothead surfers, and consequently loved Sublime. So you can see why I would never, ever want to hear "I DON'T GET ANGRY WHEN MY MOM SMOKES POT" again. I heard it screamed by wasted slackers enough when it first came out.

02 What's The Frequency, Kenneth? | R.E.M. - I don't mind this song, though really, R.E.M. were playing catchup at this point. But they made one hell of loud rock song. The song was named after a phrase uttered by a crazy person as he attacked Dan Rather. That makes it alright in my book.

03 All Mixed Up | 311 - {crickets) Anyone remember this song? Anyone? Bueller?

04 How's It Gonna Be | Third Eye Blind - Christ this song sucked. It REALLY sucked. And completely overplayed.

05 Zombie | Cranberries - Okay, I like this song. How it ever became a hit is beyond me though. Did people just drive around in their cars singing along to this? "ZAHAMBEEE! ZAHAMBEEE! AYE AYE AYE AYE AYE OH OH OH OH!" How the fuck did America give this the thumbs up?

06 Inside Out | Eve 6 - Never heard it.

07 Take A Picture | Filter - This one either. Where the fuck did they find this one?

08 Shine | Collective Soul - Heard this one. I'd make some comment about this being the worst band of the nineties, but we've still got a disc and a half to go. It's up there, though.

09 Closing Time | Semisonic - I remember the guy had glasses like Lisa Loeb and a blond shaggy haircut. He looked like he should have been on E! sitting next to Jules Asner.

10 Good | Better Than Ezra - I haven't heard Ezra but I will hazard a guess and say they're bound to be better than the band that made this turd.

11 Far Behind | Candlebox - Ladies and gentlemen, the worst band of the nineties. And I MEAN that.

12 You Get What You Give | New Radicals - How the fuck did this thing end up on here? Bad music, bad lyrics. Fits the mold, I guess.

13 What It's Like | Everlast - GRRR. I'm Irish and I'm sullen and angry! Feel my wrath!

14 Cumbersome | Seven Mary Three - Another mystery to me. Where's Sister Hazel?

15 One Week | Barenaked Ladies - Annoying as fuck.

...and disc 2.

01 Mr. Jones | Counting Crows - Oh did these guys get on my nerves. Listen to Uncle Tupelo people, not this pseudo-rustbelt rock shit.

02 Hey Jealousy | Gin Blossoms - Gin blossoms are what you get on your nose from drinking too much. Kind of like the red marks I got from bashing my head against the dash from this song being overplayed.

03 Sex And Candy | Marcy Playground - A woman I used to know would turn the radio down when the guy sang "Sex" and say "Licorice" and then turn the radio back up. It was kind of redundant, and now I have a sexual licorice fetish.

04 Breakfast At Tiffany's | Deep Blue Something - I don't know what to say to some of these. Some are just lame.

05 Runaway Train | Soul Asylum - Oh, yes. Soul Asylum. That's all I can say.

06 All I Want | Toad The Wet Sprocket - I got nothing.

07 Little Miss Can't Be Wrong | Spin Doctors - This seems a bit, um, out of place. I like that the singer looked like a hobo, though. If he had had sex with a bag lady in the video it would have been worth it.

08 Brick | Ben Folds Five - A lot of folks like Ben Folds. I, however, don't. Piano driven rock is way too Elton John for me.

09 Everything Falls Apart | Dog's Eye View - Never even heard of the band.

10 Lump | The Presidents Of The United States Of America - Didn't hear this one enough.

11 The Freshmen | Verve Pipe - My dad liked this band, and so it went into the "avoid" pile.
12 No Rain | Blind Melon - I liked Blind Melon. "Nico" is a terrific record.

13 Pets | Porno For Pyros - Perry Farrell claws his way onto this compilation.

14 Pepper | Butthole Surfers - Good song, slightly out of place.

15 Steal My Sunshine | Len - Heard it, but didn't know that was the band's name.

16 Fade Into You | Mazzy Star - Wonderful song.

17 Mother Mother | Tracy Bonham - Wow. No clue.

18 Save Tonight | Eagle-Eye Cherry - Don and Nenah Cherry must have had all of the talent in that family.

I loved the 90s and the music of the 90s. Counting Crows were always among my favorites.

6. Third Eye Blind = Worst. Band. Of. All. Time.
No wonder Charlize Theron dumped his ass. She knew stardom was on her horizon.

I do remember "All Mixed Up" by 311, sadly. Worse songs have happened. Check out "Time of Your Life" by Greenday.

7. Question
Is there any music you do like? Or do you just have a knee-jerk reaction against anything that gains a remote speck of popularity?

9. Yeah, that's what I was thinking too.
There are actually people who will hate any song simply for the fact that it's on a Billboard chart.

8. WTFK (REM), Zombie, and Brick are good songs
The rest? To hell with them.

And if you think this is bad, wait until 2010 when the real 90's nostalgia kicks in.

10. I have heard most of this stuff, not all.

I don't like third eye blind, though I liked Semi-Charmed Life. If they were going to do a third Eye Blind, it should have been that song. Other than that, of the songs on here that I know, I liked them all except for, Len-Steal My Sunshine. I hated that one along with, Marcy Playground-Sex and Candy. The first one was just annoying as hell and the second one was not great, but one of my friends talking stupidly about a girl in relation to this song made me hate it. I actually really liked "Shine" by Collective Soul.
