I usually hate remakes. Especially remakes of great movies-- what sort of egotistical snots dare think they can do it better this time?

Well, this remake just hadda be done. It's the Coens, so there are always those weird choices that make you wonder, like the snow coming and going. Or that Big Sky background when they're racing to the medicine man.

But, it held me spellbound, like Coen movies do, and I laughed a few times, like with Coen movies. And I will admit I fell for the setup and cried a little when he shot...

(Nope-- no spoiler here, but if you saw it, you know what I'm talking about.)

Just as close to a perfect little movie as can be.

And get those mothahfuckin snakes out of that muthahfuckin cave!

1. I took my niece
and she lost it during "that" scene. The scene in the cabin didn't affect her at all (crazy kid watches all the current "horror" movies) but you know....

Well behaved audience, too...as in no talking, cell phone chattin', getting up and down to run to bathroom, concession stand....they came to watch the movie. Except one guy who walked out after about 5 minutes of seeing The Dude as Rooster, who loudly proclaimed "That ain't no John Wayne" to which another attendee responded "John Wayne was a pussy".

4. John Wayne was a pussy?
Now that's funny. Guy goes to see a film, knows John Wayne isn't in it, then walks out because John Wayne isn't in it?

5. more to do with Jeff Bridges' interpretation as opposed to imitation
of JW.

the response was funny...in a very Coen-esque way. :-)

6. Guy had his mind made up before he even went
That would be my guess. He wanted to protest the remake of his all time favorite film starring his hero John Wayne. He got his money back too, he knew he would. I wonder what is the time limit for getting your money back, if any.

At any rate, glad someone responded the way they did.

3. I saw it as well
Liked it better then No Country. Jeff Bridges was awesome. The friendship that bonded Bridges and Steinfeld reminded me of the friendship and devotion between Tommy Lee Jones and Duval at the end of Lonesome Dove.

"Well, that didn't pan out." Cracked me up.

8. Funny you should say that.
I watched True Grit during Christmas then I saw Lonesome Dove for the first time last week. I felt something the same between it and True Grit, but I couldn't put my finger on it. I think you've got it.

9. From what I read, they didn't intend to remake the John Wayne movie
but to do the novel the way the novel was written. I have yet to see the new film. Looking forward to it.

10. Glad I saw it on the big screen
That's the shame of home video. The opportunity for the big-screen experience has passed.

Loved the movie. I haven't liked the last couple of Jeff Bridges flicks, and he really redeemed himself this time. I looked up the trailer for the original movie on YouTube, and it looked amateurish and sanitized by comparison (and John Wayne didn't seem the least bit gritty, compared to the new version).

11. It was so good
For all the praise heaped on Mr. Bridges and young Ms. Steinfeld, Matt Damon was pretty freaking awesome. I still giggle when I recall the way his character talked after biting through his tongue.
