A WOMAN in Saudi Arabia has undergone surgery to remove gold items and money bags she had inserted in her womb to hide them from her brothers who robbed her of her inheritance, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

The woman, identified only as "Maryam", had inserted nine rings, three chains, three charms and three bags containing money in her womb, Al-Watan said.

Surgeons at a hospital south of Riyadh removed the objects and placed them in a safe box, it said.

Al-Watan did not specifically say that the woman was Saudi, but newspapers here usually point out the nationality of non-Saudis involved in incidents.

Maryam, who is in her fifties, had been incarcerated in a room by her brothers for 11 years after she threatened to report their theft of both her share of the money left by their father and her deceased husband's inheritance.
