Mmmmm old school popcorn...
Living without a microwave these days, and cooking food on stove and oven, just because.

Anyway, decided to make a batch of popcorn in a pot, on the stove, with a layer of hot oil and popcorn kernels. Was a little apprehensive because it's been many years. I did make way too much, but add a little salt and butter and yum. success!

1. I recently went back to the do-it-yourself popcorn
Made in a pan on the stove in a little oil, then sprinkled with butter and salt.

I had almost forgotten how good popcorn tastes made that way.

And I always make too much, also. But we eat it all anyway!

and doesn't stink up the microwave with all that chemical stench

sizzle the butter to just this side of brown and it is SO YUMMY

Hadn't had any for at least a year so it was a nice change. Just butter and salt, yum!

4. They say microwave popcorn is one of the most unhealthy foods around.
Factory workers who make the stuff have lung issues from the scary chemicals in it.

I made my husband stop buying it years ago and we've been air popping or stove popping ever since ... much better.

I just put it in a glass bowl with a lid and let her rip.

7. We've been doing stovetop for a while now and in fact just bought a whirley pop today.
No steam burns. ;) It worked really well.

Stove top popcorn is so good.

8. Use olive oil to pop the corn and you won't need to add butter. Olive oil
makes great popcorn.

9. Stove top popcorn/kettle corn rocks.
All you have to do to make it kettle corn is to add roughly equal measure of plain granulated sugar to the hot oil just before you add the kernels. Lightly salt and pig out. I would make myself a micro batch right now but I'm sporting a temp crown till next Thursday.

11. I've made that occasionally for years.
I use an old aluminum pot that belonged to my grandmother. The pot probably doesn't make any difference but what the heck, it's a tradition. Ms Lasher asked me to make her some just this week.

15. To make a pan full, pour one layer of kernals in the pan
More than one layer will mean you have to dump some of the pan of popped corn into a BIG bowl, and let the rest finish popping, as you probably did, so you don't end up with a lot of 'old maids".
Or, do what I do, and have popcorn shooting out every-which-way, as I try to dump the overflowing pan into three medium sized bowls, much to the delight of my dog, Sally, who goes into vacuum cleaner mode.
